QUOTE(Hail Caesar @ Sep 1 2005, 01:07 AM)
i got another question if hdd get burn or smoke, izit bcoz of power supply or hdd is about to spoilt already?
Two things comes in mind.. Either overheating and/or faulty PSU. As for faulty HDD controller board (due to bad design and components), less likely nowadays.. However there was one which is infamous.. the Quantum Fireball series where the spindle motor driver I.C always blow due to lack of fuse and/or unstable PSU voltages. tongue.gif

Note: Faulty PSU can generate higher than normal voltages.. usually parts of the motherboard and CPU aren't affected much because the processor draws its power from an on-board voltage regulator (i.e. stepping down to VCore). wink.gif

sorry off topic abit
want to know how long is a harddisk life span
and how many time can reformat a harddisk
1000?? 10000??
Fake information: Formatting a hard disk too many times will cause it to fail.

Truth : To put it shortly, formatting your hard disk will NOT reduce its lifespan. Yes, formatting is popularly thought to reduce hard disk lifespan but that is nothing more than a myth.

Formatting is NOT a stressful event for the hard disk. The read/write heads do NOT touch the platter surface, so damage to the platter only occurs if there is any shock to the drive during operation. You can format your hard disk 20 times a day, every day and it will not be more likely to fail than any other drive.

Fake information: Formatting the hard disk will stress the needle (head actuator).

Truth: Formatting is done contiguously. This means formatting is done in a serial order, i.e. sector 500, sector 501, sector 502, etc. There is very little movement of the head actuators. Therefore, formatting will not stress the head actuators.

For the partiton being using(eg:c/) u cant perform CHKDSK C: /R, u need to [Tick] Check Disk of the particular partiton and it will fix it during the next boot.

Is that Cheetah a 10,000rpm 73LP or earlier version? Cause, I'm using one here also.. still working and running 24/7 (downloading "stuffs"). Anyway did you check the cables, wheteher it was terminated properly.. Another area to check is the jumpers.  rolleyes.gif

If all else fails, remove the drive and examine at HDD controller board. Near the power molex, there are several ferrite beads and "fuses"(those "0" ohm resistors) actually. If you have a multi-meter, check the conductivity.  wink.gif
1. no jumpers seen.
2. no problem with the card or cable coz i exchanged everything with the second identical hdd and it works.
3. no heat produced when i attached the hdd to 12v power supply from another comp for 5hr.

no other scsi cable available so can't change cable. compuzone says they dun have scsi stuff to check this hdd but they do sell it if you want it. only MyPC has cash-on-delivery SCSI cable cost rm180 (15 channel with terminal - only choice, no others will fit this hdd)

not sure what model but bought some 3 years ago. athlon t-bred 1800+ that time.

uhh one more question ,, how do i retain the ms-dos window after i check disk ?
you can't retain ms dos after chkdsk if you are checking your OS partition because it only checks on your next boot.

usually this is what i do:
1. go to start>run
2. type 'cmd' and the command prompt pops up.
3. let's say you want to check D drive and C drive is you OS. type D:\ hit enter and then type CHKDSK /F (to fix errors) or CHKDSK /R (to check free space) or CHKDSK /F /R
4. now it will ask you to force a dismount or not. make sure you are not taking anything from that drive and they type 'y'
5. chkdsk will now run in front of you and after that the window stays.

if you check you OS partition and you can't read the report fast enough after the check, when it finish checking and enter windows, go to command prompt, type CHKDSK (read-only mode) and after chkdsk finish you will see the identical report as you missed previously.

if your comp gone cranky and you decided to run chkdsk on all partitions, do not force dismount on non-os partition but schedule them to check after restart. (How can you correct the other partitions when your OS partition is corrupted??) In this case where you schedule C:\ for chkdsk with other non-os partitions, chkdsk will 1st check all partition with C:\ being the last one, and it will restart and check all non-os partition again. in that way it is better.

if you have problem with volume bipmap, free space problem, mft fragmentation, hdd data transfer corruption, please please don't run chkdsk. it will only corrupt it further.

hope this experience of mine help you guys doh.gif doh.gif

Actually no, Magnets wont kill it. The HDD is magnetically sealed because it does not want interference and all the magnetic waves going throgh the computer.

P.S another way to spoil ur HDD is open its casing. This enables dust to get in between the contacts and the discs, which ruin the hard drive
really? sweat.gif u mean open hdd casing rite? not the sidepanel/case, coz my i've left my case naked eversince i got my new 200G seagate sata tongue.gif

+got a rm15 fan under it...blows the heat i think flex.gif 32/33c normal eh rolleyes.gif

Power Outages In The Midst Of Defragmentation

A relatively rare cause of HDD failure is a power outage in the middle of a defragmentation but I have seen it happen and even though the damage is non-permanent in most cases, it may require a low level format which results in complete loss of all data.

THIS ONE IS TRUE 100% i dah kena once!
