My Maxtor OneTouch III 750GB just died not long ago. It's not even half a year yet since I bought this HDD. Anyone experience the same thing? Where should I claim the warranty from? Thanks.

You can call up the shop you bought it from to ask. Usually when you buy it, there should be a warranty card or something to provide you with warranty information.

Turn on power management. My harddisk stops after 5mins idling.

Go to Control Panels, Admin Tools, Event Viewer to check for drive read\write failure messages to confirm potential drive failure.

Always use manufacturers harddrive diagnostic tools to inspect the drive.

If your HDD has lost its performance, and normal formating doesn't help, you can consider performing a low level format (zero-fill drive), remember to backup everything first. Do not do LLF too often, maybe just once in a few years.
Search for HDDGuru website. They teached me stuff.

I'm using 5x500GB - 2 Seagate Barracuda .11, 2 Maxtor Maxline (Server grade) and 1 Seagate External with Barracuda .11.
Also have a Quantum Fireball 40GB and an Quantum Fireball 80GB in use.
So far, only my Seagate 4GB from my 266 system has died due to some unknown failure, not bad sector.
Good thing now Seagate, Maxtor and Quantum are now one big family.

I would also consider WD drives as it is also a specialized HDD maker.
I do not use electronic brands like Samsung, Fujitsu or Hitachi (No other reasons).

i dont know it has been said or not. one way to prevent hard disk crash is dont put any PORON in your hard disk. wink.gif

there is no any technical evidence to support this claim but it just happens like that.

Check ur PSU and make sure you got a level and good voltage (no spike). Also make sure your connection is tight. Sometime ur hard disk is not powered properly (not spinning) and thus the error.

You should turn off power management instead. Turning on and off hard disk frequently kill it faster. Trust me. Just set to Never.

Do you mean laptop hard disk? Then yes you can hear little bit krekk krekk but for dektop one, it is usually silent. Krekk krekkk mean backup your data now.

May i know what is the problem if my CPU can't detect my external HDD?
Previously can, just lately can't..
I connected to my laptop, can..
*

when is previously? put ur ear to the external hdd and hear if there a whirring sound. If you hear click click, try another usb port especially those that connect directly to your mobo. Dun use the front panel one. If still can't, change ur cable to a shorter one or get a new cable.

QUOTE(LilCroSs @ Mar 27 2009, 10:54 PM)
wanna ask, my hdd couldnt be sensed by computer after a gentle fall onto the floor, can it be repaired?  sad.gif
*

Nope, go claim warranty fast.

QUOTE(dlaz @ Apr 16 2009, 09:08 PM)
what about the position of the external hdd?is better when it is standing or laying down?
standing as in the side part is at the bottom, the other side on top.
laying down as in normal just like we place hdd internally.
*

Laying down missionary position. If stand, the rotating disk will have to fight the gravity.

Typical for external hdd. You must treat it gently like a lady. Dun just throw it around. Claim warranty from the shop you bought. Bring receipt. If receipt gone, go and nego. Hopefully shop owner surrender.

I agree with you on the turn-off power management point. I leave my system on all the time, so the power down benefit outweighs the frequency of powering it up unnecessarily. My drives are used as storage, and they're not active or accessed intermittently.

I think 50 is still acceptable. My segate HDD also around that temp. But after install HDD fan, reduced to 40 celcius.

---> ANyway question, some ppl said installing HDD fan actually kill the HDD faster becoz of the fan's magnet. Izzit true?

---> Does less format-ing the HDD prolong the HDD's life?

---> Does defragmenting HDD regularly prolong the HDD life? How about if too much / too frequent defragment the HDD?

HDD fan create dust on the HDD, insulating the heat, and make it hotter inside... and kills it.
Two things kill HDD, time and wear. The more you use it, the faster it dies... what you use it for, is the question. If you don't use the disk to read/write files, instead just let it run often moving files around... of course die faster lo...

Defrag should be done once a while, depending if the data is accessed so often that if degrades performance...

What is the type you get?
