Guy,

I'm having Hardy Heron 8.04 on my lappy for about a month now. I've been working with twinview without a problem until now. I manage to install few games(termoulous+nexuiz) and update all packages, my PC is not getting stable, but usually i can over come by log-off and login again. Unstable I mean is when I went to jango.com, sound works fine, but after i close jango and start to play games, the sound did came out. I've to re-login again to get the sound. My deluge also sometimes doesnt finish its job and I've to start over again.

Few question I need to ask here. Is updating my packages to the latest is a bad idea? Do i've to check on something before I install/update?
*

latest as in u did not added any additional repository? if thats the case, its advice to update to latest, but if u added development repo, better becareful with what your doing. what kind of sound card your using? i think its the problem with pulseaudio, try to manually set it in sound server, to pulseaudio, rather than alsa (note: alsa in 8.04 is just a proxy for pulseaudio, which doesnt works very well..buggy)

thank you for sharing ur thought on this fastcx, i appreciate your help.

i got to admit tht i'm new too ubuntu and still reading and learning to understand how/what OS works. Regarding the update tht i've done, its all from the synaptic package manager. almost every alternate days I got a 'buzz' theres newer update on some package I believe i did not ever update any development package as I think thats will bring more unstability to my running OS.

I'm running mu ubuntu on compaq 3282AU, using HDA Nvidia mixer(ALSA Mixer), which it was configured by default.

If there is anything I should know about updating package/repository/dependency please point me more.

try to set your ubuntu bluetooth manager to do discovery mode, so that you can detect your n82, make sure your n82's bluetooth is on in the process smile.gif let it discover, n mess with your bluetooth manager if u like, it wont hurt the system wink.gif dont worry

Hai guys!

I'm having a pretty newbie problem with Ubuntu and their support forums are slow to reply me so I thought I'd seek help here. I'll provide as much info as possible.

I basically have three internal hard disk and I would like to share two of them over the network. The problem is, Ubuntu insist that I'm not the owner to these hard disk and therefore, I cannot edit them or change permissions to some of the files in them.
Take for example, some files in hard disk "Media 1" are locked and I can't access them over the network. I have no problems sharing the drives over entire network using the classic shares-admin.

sudo fdisk -l gives:
CODE
Disk /dev/sda: 15.0 GB, 15020457984 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1826 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00017566

  Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1        1744    14008648+  83  Linux
/dev/sda2            1745        1826      658665    5  Extended
/dev/sda5            1745        1826      658633+  82  Linux swap / Solaris

Disk /dev/sdb: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

  Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1               1        4999    40146592+  af  Unknown

Disk /dev/sdc: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdc doesn't contain a valid partition table

Both Disk sdb and sdc are readable and accessible via network and FIle Browser, but I can't seem to get
'fstab' to get it to mount properly.

I've tried to change ownership but this is what I get:
CODE
lionel@lionel-ubuntu:~$ sudo chown -R lionel /media/Media 1
chown: cannot access `/media/Media': No such file or directory
chown: cannot access `1': No such file or directory

do you know your /dev/sdb1's filesystem? and /dev/sdc? from this fdisk, its like your /dev/sdc is empty without a valid fs around...n sdb1 is unknown to fdisk...i just ask to make sure, so i can send u what you can add into fstab...just to let ubuntu recognise sdb1 n sdc1(if it exist) n it's owner

thanks for you help fastcx
but I kinda figured out the problem already.
The filesystems are Apple Mac OS Extended Journal, therefore unknown to the system.
I did a long way round this problem, copied it off to another external HD through a Mac, formatted the drive using Gparted to something
Ubuntu friendly (fat32) and now recopying the data back.

Now how do I edit my fstab to get the disk MediaOne to auto mount every boot?

Thanks for your help.

ok, your welcome. i use your current content and add in a couple of lines for media1(which i assume is /dev/sdb1, if its not, change that to the 1 thats suitable)

CODE
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=1710fe3a-2670-465f-9828-1bfe4480a904 /               ext3    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=aebaf572-dd6a-4b1c-a316-46a4394738be none            swap    sw              0       0
#I assume Media 1 is on /dev/sdb1, if its incorrect change it to the appropriate 1. e.g. change /dev/sdb1 to /dev/sdc1
/dev/sdb1 /media/Media\ 1 auto defaults,user,exec,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=000 0 0
#i notice u have 2 partition, 1 is for media 1, another is? in that case, u can copy the previous line and paste it under the last line with device name changed to appropriate 1 n mount point. hope it works in ubuntu, it worked in gentoo n other distro tho
/dev/scd0       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0
/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0

cheers!

my windows partition was beyond repair so was my linux.
both booting like snail.
so i thought i just use the recovery cd to recover windows.
then reinstall linux on top.
however GRUB is still persistent after windows recovery.
