Solaris 10 for x86 is created for x86 , means intel or AMD
solaris 10 for sparc is created for sun sparc, means for sparc processor. but there are many different, like Sun Sparc they have different keyboard which is able to perform some job in the system . like Predective Self-Healing only can run in Sparc cause Sparc have big size of CACHE but x86 dont have.. if you have money, get a Sparc to run solaris 10 u will know the different. But too bad, i dont have enough money, so x86 is enough for me. When i become expert i will go to buy an 2nd hand sparc machine. yes, i have dual boot for both win xp and solaris 10 x86 version. |

I tried to install Solaris on my laptop. It booted, but the CD complained about files not being found. So I scrapped it. Those 5 CD images were taking up space anyway. All Unices seem to look for CDs on the IDE channel, not on the USB channel, it seems. I installed Gentoo instead... which was possible, because you could chroot in, and the install was fully manual.
That said, I'm really looking forward to installing Debian on some oldskool Pentium machines tomorrow! |

you can complain solaris has very bad supported in x86 ( maybe ur hardware too latest or too rare, but mine both PC working properly)
files not being found maybe is ur CD problem or CD ROM problem but i dont think is Image problem. these 5 CDs is included many things. like packages , documentation and etc. i dont think 5 CDs is very expensive nowadays unless you store in hdd . chroot, as i know gentoo is install from source, that's why you need to do something like configure PPPoE 1st if not u cannot connect to internet and get source from server/ftp. But Solaris and Linux has many different, if you interested you can go to explore it. In Linux, every new user was created will have own dir under the /home , but in solaris which is under /export/home ( but system also have /home, but as i know is READ mode only ). So, dont think they both is same. If they both is same, there have no point to learn it. oldskiool pentium haha what is the point ? is it same like my friend ( 100Mhz, 32MB EDO RAM , freeBSD 4.9 + Qmail ) only can let few people to use his email server? this is the point to play around with oldskool Pentium ? IF MS also same like Linux, we can run MS W2k on 386, i dont think we will have a PC with high speed CPU, huge ram, DVD and etc. |

Gee... sure, if I get to work on a new machine, I might try out Solaris again. I like DTrace. BTW, should I do OpenSolaris or Solaris 10 now?
Don't diss the Pentium. It was games that drove hardware forward, not Windows. Besides, it's only going to be a file server. The point of doing such stuff on an old computer? Obvious: I optimize the machine enough to make it useful, instead of it being the dumb Win95 doorstop it is now, and you admire me because I somehow got that machine running as smooth as any machine nowadays. And it actually serves some purpose too (well I sure hope the machine's newer than that, your friend's machine probably won't even do UDMA-33). EDIT: it wasn't a cd image problem, hackintosh.... just boot the computer from a USB CDROM drive. The Windows XP install disc can locate the files, but any automated linux/unix CD install disc will fail to locate the files. This post has been edited by randomshinichi(): Jul 24 2005, 12:40 AM |

maybe the problem is due to lack of hardware supported. u also know what, solaris x86 still not the main objective for SUN.
DTrace really looks very cool, somemore have many script for D trace available already. You can try out with those script. not sure about Open Solaris . As i know Open Solaris is based on the solaris 11, code named, Nevada ( as i know, when Sun release the solaris 10 , they already started develop the Solaris 11) and now they share thier system for everyone. ( maybe they can get good code from community what haha but i think the great technology like D Trace, Predective Self-Healing still need Sun to develop it) |

QUOTE(hackintosh @ Jun 30 2005, 07:25 PM) dont argue, learn from me, give up to BSD and Linux moved to Solaris 10. Maybe you will not move from Linux to Solaris, unless u have a chance to see how powerful of Solaris. I've such chance already. PS : Revenge of the Sun ( Open Solaris is same like Anakin Skywalker, which is used to challenge Linux. ) anakin turned back in Star wars Ep6 - Return of the Jedi. That means Linux (Jedi) will triumph over sun (sith). |
