QUOTE(hobbiton @ Sep 6 2010, 12:32 PM) The logs show a lot of incoming new connection requests, mostly on the SSH port and using all sort of common usernames. I suppose its a brute force attack.Reverse DNS lookup points it back to China. Are you getting them too? |

On the basic DIR-615, what are the recommended steps to secure the router from outside access? The BTU modem as well.
So far I've only changed the passwords for the admin and operator accounts on my DIR-615 to an alphanumeric password of my own. Other than that, nothing else. |

I'm glad i read Riz's guide to disable that remote management thing and enable firewall Reverse DNS lookup points it back to China. Are you getting them too? At the moment, I start to feel that my dlink is getting SICK, connected but unable to use internet... time to whip out vlan bridge |

QUOTE(auronthas @ Sep 6 2010, 02:59 PM) I received the same message from the installer as he mentioned UNIFI personnel may need to configure your system within a month. After 3 days UNIFI installed, I break the rules and have VLAN bridge over DIR-615 Im not sure about that, but from what I read around the thread, its best to decrease as much load from the DIR and pass it to your router since DIR is so easy to kaput.... so yeah, i think it would be better to enable firewall in your "real" router =pAdded on September 6, 2010, 3:02 pm Can I enable firewall on my internet router (TLink WP941N) instead of DIR-615, i.e. disable firewall on DIR-615? |

A few Sifus here also recommend this one, you may read more review on this unit though before you make up your mind.any other routers you'd guys recommend if i were to just get a router (without vlan thing), no idea which to get... but as long with dd-wrt im good. |

Hope anyone of you here don't mind helping me to clarify this. Just want to be sure if I understand this correctly since I'm about to install it.
So if we get MikroTik RB250GS then we can straight away keep DIR 615 and allow RB250GS (no need for another custom router?) to handle all the loads from VOIP, Internet and IPTV? Another choice we can go for is getting a custom router with VLAN and hook it up with DIR 615 to reduce crashing and reliability issues? This post has been edited by BlueWind: Sep 6 2010, 05:38 PM |

QUOTE(BlueWind @ Sep 6 2010, 05:37 PM) Hope anyone of you here don't mind helping me to clarify this. Just want to be sure if I understand this correctly since I'm about to install it. the RB250GS is to replace the DIR-615 completely. But you would still need a router on the back end doing pppoe dial. mikrotik should be more reliable as the switch is design for business usage. So if we get MikroTik RB250GS then we can straight away keep DIR 615 and allow RB250GS (no need for another custom router?) to handle all the loads from VOIP, Internet and IPTV? Another choice we can go for is getting a custom router with VLAN and hook it up with DIR 615 to reduce crashing and reliability issues? another solution is to make DIR-615 a simple bridge, then get any retail router do pppoe dial. but this solution only lighten the load of 615, you still run the risk of 615 fail anytime. till now I only have 615 enable as bridge, and torrent only 80 connection(more than enough to fully use up 5mbps anyway). I have never do torrent and IPTV at the same time. 615 doing fine so far, if all these fail, then looks like the only choice to go is with Mikrotik. I suspect the 615 high failure rate is because it is not design to handle vlan tagging and IPTV streaming. Torrenting 24/7 and IPTV would probably be too much for that simple cheap home router. 615 is just a simple router. TM obviously trying to modified proton waja engine with evo turbo for Drag race. I cant believe they use the same consumer router for BIZ package(with vlan tagging too). Why would a corporate with thousands ringgit worth of high quality network devices need to hook their network on this silly small router? Well thats my opinion, not really good in this networking thingy. This post has been edited by billytong: Sep 6 2010, 06:10 PM |

Seems like getting another router will be a viable option for me and I also found out that RB250GS isn't equipped with wireless networking feature and the reason is that it is intended for business usage rather than home I suppose.
