IMHO, Perl language is widely used on OSS projects and even though you not a programmer you do need to know about installing Perl modules are least. As most Linux Distro pre-load the Perl interpreter but may not load the Perl modules that you need for some OSS applications comes as source codes instead of binary in RPM and APT packages.

For those who are interested in Perl, these the site the Perl monger visit for tutorials, articles, support. and etc...
