Many distro like redhat, suse and mandrake charge a fee for their product. Is it legal to use their os for free?

There are no legal or illegal issue on this... Everything is legal in Open Source as long as u not crossing the GPL(but alot of ppl are crossing GPL out there)...

Let me put an example of RH; u can install and running RH on anything u want... but with out the "code", u can't update the stuff in RH automatically (up2date repo is blocked)... by the way, u still can download the source or the rpm some where else to update the system on ur own skill and risk... The samething is apply to SLES as well, and the dif is in SLES Novell allowed ppl to auto update the stuff for 30 days b4 it close the port for update...

Remember, in Linux u are paying the price for update and stable system support... Unlike MS, they charge for everything...

if i'm not mistaken they charging for service not code....
Service like : CD. User manual, Book, ebook, custom code and bla but they can't copy right it cause it means for CopyLeft (what they used to call before GPL license exit)
Code are free to use without any fees smile.gif

if only my memory still serve me right (ten year lia, most stuff return to the lec tongue.gif )
