Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years. Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up. The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football. It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans. Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by. But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games. Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground. But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason. The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown. Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions. Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch. As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet. With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United. Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet. Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers. Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006) STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job. MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley. SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season. STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time. PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again. MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot. BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later. BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season. GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League. NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins. |

QUOTE(alien2003 @ Jan 27 2010, 04:36 PM) Win by aggregate within 90min = through Equal on aggregate after 90min = Extra Time Equal on aggregate after Extra Time = away goal rule If away goal also tied then penalty Anyway, new thread http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1304502 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_League_Cup QUOTE Semi-finals The four quarter-final winners compete in this round. The ties are played over two matches (one at each club's stadium), with the aggregate score being used to determine the winners. If the aggregate scores are level at the end of the 90 minutes, extra time is played. If the scores are still level at the end of extra time, the team which has scored more away goals goes through. If the number of away goals is still level, a penalty shootout is used to decide the winners. |

QUOTE(onepack @ Jan 27 2010, 05:06 PM) If Bellamy can caused problems for Rafael in 1st leg, I can't see Gary survive there! Depends if Rio play, maybe Brown as RB instead? He didn't played against Hull so should be fresh. Rooney - Seedorf is a threat QUOTE Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says Clarence Seedorf poses the biggest threat to the club's UEFA Champions League quest. Rooney knows only too well the Dutchman's ability in front of goal having witnessed it first hand when AC Milan knocked United out of the competition in the 2004-05 and 2006-07 campaigns. Seedorf featured on both occasions and will look to have a similar impact when the two sides meet for the first of two legs at the San Siro on 16th February. Given his record, Rooney believes that, with such capable firepower, Milan pose the biggest threat to the 2008 champions' quest for European glory. The best "Seedorf (is the Milan player I fear most)," Rooney told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "He's probably the best player I've ever played against. "Rarely have I seen a player do what he does on the field. You can't leave him out." Rooney admitted to looking forward to coming up against former Red Devil David Beckham in the two-legged affair. "David is a champion and he represents United's history," he said. "I hope he gets a great welcome. It'll be exciting to play against him." Fear Looking ahead to the 2010 World Cup, Rooney spoke favourably of England coach Fabio Capello's stern approach. He admitted that the Italian's all-or-nothing attitude has had a huge impact on the squad. "He scares us, he's like a strict father," said Rooney. "He's made us more of a team. He's worked above all on the tactics. "Now we change them for every match." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11863_5886825,00.html |

QUOTE(alien2003 @ Jan 27 2010, 05:10 PM) If Bellamy can caused problems for Rafael in 1st leg, I can't see Gary survive there! Depends if Rio play, maybe Brown as RB instead? He didn't played against Hull so should be fresh. yup.. i prefer rio and evans in the middle and brown to play as RB..(not gary pls and most probably valencia will start as a RW... nani @ giggs subs for the LW |

QUOTE(Zeten @ Jan 27 2010, 05:16 PM) i always thought away goal kicks in within 90 minutes not after extra times. is this something new solely for carling cup? Yup, only the weirdo Carling Cup has it AFTER extra time Rooney can fire us to Wembley QUOTE Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring form means he is English football’s current best player, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, who has watched the United no.10’s growing maturity and experience as an out-and-out striker has added a prolific scoring rate to his already influential talismanic qualities. United boss Sir Alex is confident that Rooney, who now has 20 goals in 28 games so far this season, can break the 30-goal barrier. It seems highly plausible given his current form and with a potential further 24 matches if United go all the way in the Carling Cup and Champions League. “He's in such great form that there's nobody really matching him [in England] at the moment,” Sir Alex says. “His goalscoring form has put him up there. "I'm not suggesting there aren’t other good players in the country. There are. But I'm happy with Wayne’s form. If he continues this way he could get to 30 goals quite easily.” Rooney has always displayed an eye for goal, but he is finding the net with unerring consistency this season, and Sir Alex thinks he knows the reason why. “The main reason he is scoring more goals is because he is in the right place at the right time. That's what goalscorers do,” he says. “Wayne has become more aware of the penalty box, too. Playing him in that direct role gives him an appetite to be in the box all the time. He has moments where he goes into other areas of the pitch, but I think he’s choosing those moments more maturely. “I don't think he's become more selfish. I think he's developing his game the right way. He realises his main asset to us is being the main striker through the middle, threatening all the time. He's getting the rewards for that. “He has 20 goals now and the crucial part of the season is coming up. I think he can easily get above 30. His ratio at the moment suggests that he will. Experience is always a key issue. "Only through experience do you get the maturity and authority in your game. That's the same with every player. I had that experience when I got to 24 or 25. I felt then I was starting to understand myself more. Every player is like that, it's not just Wayne. But he’s showing that now in his game.” http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6645702 Raise the roof QUOTE It may be down to Sir Alex and his players to get the job against Manchester City on Wednesday night, but there can be no underestimating the part the fans can play in helping the Reds reach Wembley. United currently trail Roberto Mancini's side 2-1 despite dominating the Carling Cup semi-final first leg for long periods. With a place at Wembley up for grabs, as well as local pride, the Old Trafford faithful are being urged to get right behind the lads. "I know for sure that our crowd will rise to the occasion," insists Sir Alex in his United Review programme notes. "I don't think I even have to ask the fans to turn up the volume. It will just happen." "The best thing the fans can do is make a big impact on the atmosphere which will raise the performance levels of the players," says Reds' legend Bryan Robson in his column. "Playing in a Manchester derby is a great feeling and I found that I was completely aware of the impact it had on the fans. "You don’t want to send your supporters in to work the next morning getting stick from the City fans they work with. There’s local pride at stake and you don’t want to be on the losing side." Paddy Crerand echoed those sentiments in United Review, adding: "No fan should underestimate the part they can play on an occasion like this. "City will have a big following, but there’ll be enough Reds to give the players a real lift." http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6645684 Giggs: Roar us to Wembley QUOTE Ryan Giggs has called on the Old Trafford faithful to roar the Reds to Wembley as United gear up for the Carling Cup semi-final second leg clash with Manchester City. Despite being outplayed for much of the first leg, Roberto Mancini's men bring a 2-1 advantage to M16 on Wednesday night. Giggs feels a similar display from the Reds to that on show at Eastlands last week will turn the tie in United’s favour, but he insists the fans' support is equally important. "They are going to play a massive part. It was a great atmosphere at Eastlands and our fans were absolutely brilliant. We need them to get behind us again because it really does make a difference," he told ManUtd.com. "It's not often you play City in a night game - it'll be like a European match in some respects which is obviously something we're used to and something which we usually thrive on. "It was a great game at Eastlands and although we didn't get the result we wanted if we perform like that again on Wednesday then we should be okay." While players and fans alike will be keen to secure local bragging rights, Giggs says it’s important not to lose sight of the bigger picture. "Of course, it’s a derby but it's also a cup semi-final with a place at Wembley at stake and a trophy at the end of it," he added. "We're the holders and we want to defend our trophy." http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6645641 This post has been edited by alien2003: Jan 27 2010, 05:20 PM |
