I have just purchase a new domain, and would like to make a purchase on web hosting too. Sadly i dont know much about webhosting, i will be using my domain/webhost for a small forum like phpbb3. here is my question

1. is it right to use shared hosting?
2. cpanel, directadmin, plesk, fantastico - which one should i use?
3. diskpace/storage, datatransfer - how much it should be?

any help would be appreciated.

for a new forum, shared hosting is ok. storage and transfer doesnt really matter too. 500mb/1gb will do. as your forum grows, you can upgrade usually.

as for control panel, I think cpanel/directadmin is the easiest to use.

Setting up phpbb for small forum? Like djzen said.. For starter site, the amount of space/bandwidth needed is small.. Maybe 1gb space & 10gb bandwidth is enough already.. Phpbb script only use 60~70mb space..

Looking for hosting for forum usage. I would like to recommend you use the fantastico feature to install the phpbb as it is much more easier to install the phpbb by using fantastico. Start the forum with shared hosting would be fine, but eventually will need to upgrade to semi dedicated hosting package in order to cater your forum site usage.

exactly. start with a basic hosting package because you dont want to spend a few hundred for the first few months. if you hit a problem, find your hosting provider to upgrade it.

stevito is right. For a beginner, fantastico is easier to use. smile.gif

Yeah, a pre-install feature is better for a beginner to setup a forum. However, for choosing the web hosting location is very important too. If your target members are malaysian, then you should go for local hosting provider where their web server hosted at malaysia. However, if your forum is open for global which include western country users, then I would probably recommend you to go for foreign hosting.

FYI, this will really affect your forum reputation if the hosting having downtime often due to routing issue from local to foreign or foreign to local. Our "SnailMyx" regularly will bring a "downtime" gift for you if the targeted users and hosting location is different.

Just 2 cents from me.

Happy forum-ing!
