Does anyone knows how to shot "bokeh" effect using normal digital camera? I know this is only possible only with DSLR that has "bokeh" lens. Hopefully you guys can help.

i'm not sure, but from my experience, point n shoot cams usually can do bokeh in macro mode..i guess the lens's depth of field is not shallow enuf to blur the background when the subject is quite far..maybe a photography sifu could give u a better explaination or corrects me if i'm wrong..

can try la
zoom in all the way max
then try taking just a head n shoulder shot
the back ground will be very slightly blurred
the sensor size is too small to achieve shallow dof

Oh ya hor. Totally forgot those superzoom compacts with like 28-200 or 28-300 lens all can do. I remember trying a 28-200 compact at 200mm, can bokeh when zoomed in all the way.

i got cheeop fujifilm, the normal ones lar.. bokeh can be achieved... if shoot at close distances.. e.g I was shooting a pen, zoomed to the max, macro mode,at close distance.. Got bokeh there lar.. but of course, its at minimal.. memang with a dslr, there is more bokeh, normal compact cams, if shooting people, can forget about the bokeh..

put more light on the bkground and the bokeh will show..

flex.gif using a compact can get bokeh but bcoz the DoF not shallow enuff so wont be able to achieve much..

i.e this one:
user posted image

shot using wireless flash to make all the shiny2 thing in the bkground do the 'halo' bokeh shapes..
done this yesterday..

TS, if ur a real macro/bokeh freak..
try entry level DSLR first lor..
the price (for 2nd hand) is quite affordable

It depends on the distance of your subject to the distance of the background. If far away can .

Ability to achieve "bokeh" isn't the only reason people buy DSLRs.

try to zoom to the max..or use macro mode to get close to ur subject...digital camera should be able to help u blur out the background a lil...but if u wanna achieve those bokeh from dslr..then its probably not that possible...

or just stay close to subject, because normally compact digicam have widest aperture at widest zoom.

this work even on handphone camera

It's just a factor for you to purchase your DSLR.
It's not the main reason people buy DSLRs. I believe that people mainly buy DSLRs for better quality images. biggrin.gif
Just my 2 cents.

Erm..... Just a bit off topic here.

Does tilt & shift effect qualify as a Bokeh? Seen some people use those effect on photoshop before. Blurs out the background.

For P&S, I can only see bokeh in macro mode and very very close to subject.

[off topic]
i think bokeh should be one of the main factor too..but of coz..there r people who doesnt like bokeh smile.gif

alot people get dslr n produces sharper n higher resolution images..but sadly..alot of them dont understand that sharp+high resolution does not equal to "high quality"... whistling.gif

@ShenWoo
my own definition for bokeh means the quality of the blurred/OOF area...no doubt tilt shift creates blur background..u can create it in photoshop..or even use the alienskin bokeh filter to create bokeh as someone mentioned on top...it'd be blurred..but it wouldnt look too good/natural...
