Canon 500D,

Sony a550 lacks optical quality compared to Canon.

this was based on my observation on my friend's Sony a550, the colours are weird, AF focus is off, High ISO range doesnt help much either (very noisy), LCD resolution? (who cares!)

to add, if you need HD videos, get the 500D.

maybe I'm just bias. biggrin.gif

go and do comparison of the spec, then go to the camera shop and held on to both the camera which one feels good then that would be the one.

I will choose A550.
I think it's the best dslr under rm3k.
Look at the specs
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sonydslra550/page2.asp
Please tell me if there is any other model which has better spec than this one.

A550 lacks optical quality??? ya ka?
colors are weird??? huh?
AF focus is off ??? you mean a550 doesnt auto focus properly?
High ISO very noisy ??? huh?

LCD resolution, who cares? ... I care tongue.gif

There are some excellent photos in the net taken from a550.
Maybe your friends' A550 has a problem or maybe need to check on shooting technique.
Maybe you could ask your "friend" to post the weird colored, off focus AF and noisy ISO photos for us to see ? smile.gif

aiya I saw ppl even use 300D/10D/EOS D60 take good photo what.

Buy sony alpha and you are welcomed to join their thread thumbup.gif

but spec by spec, A550 offers better ler.

I still choose canon because the reputation, choices of lenses when considering upgrade, resell value.

I'm not being fanboy, only sohai spammer will try to increase post count

Added on November 1, 2009, 6:02 pmTS,

I've seen people use those cameras before and their pictures came out awesome! It doesn't matter what you choose to get, u got creativity/ideas
you got a hell of a good picture.

but if you are thinking of upgrading soon 500D is my vote.

Perhaps you can elaborate more why you prefer canon after testing both.

I tried both, 500D feel like a plastic toy on my hands.
A550 has better build and grip, its ISO performance should be on par.

To the thread starter. I'm sure you can find online many comparisons of image quality between these 2 cameras.

Good place to start is dpreview, they have lots of consistent studio images you can download and checked it out yourself.

i will just recommend people to try it first rather than follow other's suggestion because the feeling of the camera in my hand is rather important. when i grip d3000 or d5000 for example its a little too small to my liking.

well, thats my theory anyway smile.gif

I agree with your theory smile.gif
try the camera in your hands first. At least the TS has already shortlisted which camera to choose. So go to shop and try hands on smile.gif

to be honest, I never liked the grip on the 400D / 450D / 500D. and i also do not like the grip of the A230 / A330. but i like the grip of the A550.... does it matter? hell, yes it does matter! And handling is a very personal preference....

and i don't believe the optical quality of sony carl zeiss or G lenses are any worse than canon's L series lenses. both are equally as expensive as well. those who said otherwise are just fanboys....

so which will I choose if I'm TS? If video recording is not an issue (and it never was an issue for me), I will choose the A550. smile.gif superior handling, fast, very nice colors straight out of the camera, built-in wireless flash functionality with dedicated Sony flashes (which is not expensive compared to Canon's equivalent), and built-in image stabilizer (meaning each AF lens is image-stabilized, even up to 20 years old AF lenses! something the Canon cannot beat).
