i am also searching for the compact camera which has the image quality close to dslr last few weeks...maybe i can share with u some of the camera i am looking at..
at first, i am thinking to get olympus e-p1..the image quality is superb and near to dslr but lack of built in flash.. panasonic gf1 also very nice but lack of body image stability..and perhaps olympus e-p2 will come soon...this 3 all can change the lens..and size is smaller than dslr

aftr that, i read many users and review abt panasonic LX3.. the image quality is also not bad just lack of zoom.. canon s90 is smaller but got some function cant find on it.. G11 has more function but bigger size..in terms of quality especially night shot, LX3 is still better than G11 due to the lens.. u can refer to the link but i found some spec is not correct..u can try to find the spec in their own web :
http://www.review2.net/cameras/s90-vs-lx3-.../comment-page-1

at last, i bought LX3 last few days, i can say the photos taken is nicer and really clearer compare to my olympus u series..

but i am also waiting for e-p2 cos i am really attract by the photos taken by e-p1...if not cos e-p2 is on its way, i think i will get it already.. .. tongue.gif

this does not hold true in compact cams because it is much easier to retain high IQ on small cameras especially with their small sensors. I once own the Sony DSC-F828, a beast itself that has a 28-200mm f/2.0-2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens. The optics are superb but it has high noise level even at base ISO

I stand corrected.

Added on November 1, 2009, 9:02 pm

RM6-7K ?? wohooo...more affordable and good camera suggestion?? canon g10 looks good (after reading the lumious-landscape.com brief review)..
any better than canon g10??
honestly, i dunno much about camera.. need to do some reading...any links for ur compact camera suggestion??
thanks!!

Added on November 1, 2009, 9:03 pm
is it the image quality of 4/3 tech have the same as DSLR image?? really??

Added on November 1, 2009, 9:06 pm
among all cameras that u suggest the best is??? already read some about the canon g10 at luminous-landscape..looks good and the size not so big..yup, smaller than DSLR..

Added on November 1, 2009, 9:10 pm
can u put some pic here??  i'll try to search about GRD3....
thanks!!

I can't promise you that the Micro Four Thirds technology has same IQ (Image Quality) of DSLR but reviews from multiple sources say it has comparable IQ with entry-level DSLRs but cost more than some entry-level DSLRs...

i bought from lumix station as many place out of stock in my place here..so no choice have to grab it since its the last one there too.. tongue.gif but according to some users they bought it for rm1500-1600.. if lumix station, it will cost u more than tat...i really satisfy with the quality produce from a small compact camera like this.. i am a newbie too....

e-p1 cost abt rm2600 for single lens and twin lens will cost u abt rm3200.. but if u can wait, better wait for e-p2 which will on its way soon..but the price should be more than e-p1.. or else u can look at panasonic gf-1..but the price also around rm2900+..

so my first choice is LX3, S90 then G11 but depend on ur usage.. the only complain abt Lx3 is the zoom..just 2.5X.. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif this is only my personal view.

ytd checked the prices of S90 at a few Mid Valley shops.. quoted from RM1499 to Rm1599 for the set of S90+ 4 gb memory + screen protector + casing

LX3, ranged from RM1599 to RM1699 for the set of lx3+ 4 gb memory + screen protector + casing + tripod

another sharp asking was RM1699 for the set of lx3+ 16 gb memory + screen protector + casing + tripod --> this looks every attractive!!

New competitors only if they join the 4/3 bandwagon. If a player has most of its lens on 35mm or 1.5/1.6x crop sensor platform, then it would have to rebuild their lens products for 4/3 or m4/3. And we don't know how valuable this m4/3 market is yet so it would be risky to jump into it this so soon.

For Olympus, it is a natural decision for them since they have been on 4/3 for quite some time. m4/3 is backward compatible with 4/3 lenses (via an adapter) so it already have a good choice of lenses to support the ecosystem. After all it supports people's expectation of having DSLR quality on a compact body. Panasonic can be treated as a new comer and it rides on Olympus's ecosystem.

Tell that to Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc. They could be reluctant. Building a new sensor platform and its own lenses would be to overwrite everything it has done with the introduction of 1.5/1.6x and its lenses back in the earlier days. So with popular brand preferences ruled out, we're left with Kodak, Fujifilm, Sigma or maybe even a Leica etc. I am confident people would vote on Olympus or a Panny anytime. With that, the price of EP1/2, GF1 will not move.

agreed with u..i think now still no news saying that other competitors will produce m4/3 camera...hopefully the price will drop then open up more market..then that time will attract more users and competitors too..

been using LX3 and i must say overall it's great compact digi cam with DSLR like function but of coz you can't compare the image quality with a DSLR ... see it as a starting point if you're really wanna make photography as a hobby and a good DSLR lense can easily be more expensive than an LX3

I'd say the LX3/DL4 is the ultimate SLR companion.

haiyah if you people want to just resize for web, who's gonna tell the difference la?

i've seen DSLR taken pictures that look like from compact / prosumer.

i've seen compact / prosumer taken pictures that look like from DSLR.

if your usage is casual and want compact, any compact camera today produces good image quality already. just buy one that you like that's within your budget and be happy with it.

I use Canon Powershot A1000 IS and Nokia N86 for my happy convenient snapping. my Fujifilm Finepix S7000 photos (6MP) also used for big prints. brows.gif

The old adage is that the best camera you can have is what you have with you, and it is for this reason that I find that it is always good to have a super compact that can sit in the pocket more often than in a drybox - at least for me, if I have a DSLR it will sit mostly in a drybox.

My LX3 is too big for my pockets, but the F70EXR sits snugly. It is a very controversial camera, esp on dpreview forums, but it is the best supercompact that I have played with for a long time, at an unbeatable price.

If u can narrow ur need, describe what kind of photography that u intend to step into, i think here have a lot of experience sifu can gv u great suggestion. In case u dont want to make unnecessary spending. May be some of the great product is just simply overkill for ur type of photography. Just my opinion.
