Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Depends on what your final output is (screen, postcards, A4, exhibition?)

These compacts are highly rated for their image quality and ease-of-use (in no particular order): Lumix LX3, Canon G10 and G11, Canon S90.

This is a good article:

Looking for a compact with SLR IQ is pointless if ur looking at cheap price. In order to make a compact with that kinda IQ it costs even more than SLR. There's only 2 compacts with true SLR sensor size n IQ. Sigma DP2 n Leica X1 both have proper SLR size sensors in them n they cost a lot. The Leica X1 will cost sumthin like rm6-7k. DP2 is about rm4k IINM.

The micro 4/3 cams r not proper SLR size sensors yet cost more than low level SLRs oredi. Best bet is get SLR if u want the IQ at cheap price. Get a compact only if money is no object.

If you want something very compact that has IQ (image quality) of an entry-level DSLR, you'd have to look at Micro Four Thirds technology which costs more than some entry-level DSLRs.

dude of course it cost more than an entry level slr la..just look at the size! when u miniature the size of any gadgets the initial price will be very high.
Anyway m4/3 sensor size is = 4/3 which is actually the sensor size for 4/3 sLR which is smaller than other competitor.

u can treat m4/3 is a point n shoot on steroid but can change lens and add in slr performance flash gun too!! (try bringing it to a concert!!)

Sigma DP1 and LEica Lx1 have bigger sensor size but cannot change lens. so u r stuck with that focal length 4va.

But if your main concern is fast AF i suggest to look at SLR (sony a550 looks cool but not yet released.) cause micro 4/3 is aint a SLR.

for less than rm1600, look around for panasonic lx3 and canon s90. u can consider the canon g10 or g11 if you dont think its too big (still smaller than an SLR of course)

In good light, compact cams generates very high image quality that is on par with DSLRs. However DSLRs excels in low light capture, focus tracking, and full control on DoF; these are thing were compact cams can never deliver. smile.gif

I highly recommend Ricoh's GRD cameras. The latest one is the Ricoh GRD3. I'm currently using the older Ricoh GRD2 and I have to tell you the handling and options are amazing. One disadvantage though is that there's no optical zoom ( the camera has a prime lens ).

I don't know about Ricoh's.
However, if it's prime lens it should be sharper than zoom lens. brows.gif

Added on November 1, 2009, 12:03 pmAnd no, it's not much of disadvantage because it's sharper.

this does not hold true in compact cams because it is much easier to retain high IQ on small cameras especially with their small sensors. smile.gif I once own the Sony DSC-F828, a beast itself that has a 28-200mm f/2.0-2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens. The optics are superb but it has high noise level even at base ISO sweat.gif
