Hi, I'm looking at getting a new ADSL modem.

And are wondering, how will off the shelves modem compares with TM modem, in terms of performances?

Signal will be better? (Performance wise)
Routing features? (If more than 20 users)

Of course, most off the shelves routers have firewall and weblog / QOS features nowadays.

What're your opinions?

I'm considering getting Netgear DG834 modems.
At first thought of getting linksys AG241... but that's kinda old/dc model already.

Any other opinions?

TQ

well,no difference if you observer.modems are judges if they are better by speed,in malaysia we are chained to mostly 1mbps of crap service,so no matter how good of a modenm you buy it will still be crap with our 1mbps service.
i suggest just buy any modem for now, maybe until fibre optic comes out then we can see what is a better modem.

The normal modem is fine. I can achieve very high speed while downloading (up to 400kbps) using the Billion modem. Not necessary to waste money upgrading the modem.

It's actually the line, your computer speed, etc that affects your internet/downloading performance/experience.

That is soooooo TRUE! The modem TM give you is good in one regard, no matter how bad the line is, it can still connect!

Thanks for the replies, I'm actually thinking more of the built in router feature.

If 1 user, I guess the streamyx modem is good enough, more like if there's 20 users sharing the same gateway and the modem acts as a router too.

Made up my mind to go with netgear DG834G, initially wanted to get linksys AG241 though.

Between those two, any suggestions?

Thanks for the feedback.
