Some Incident That Happens To Me..


Here is the list I want to share with Y'all:

1. Taking Constructive Criticism Personally

2. Not Knowing Paula Scher, Milton Glaser, Paul Rand and WHY they were famous.

3. Not Staying up on Current Events and Design News

4. Not Owning the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook - Why should I have? Just copy modify n paste la *PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!!

5. Charging too Little for Design Projects... Desperate? Wanna built portfolio? Come on Friend, WAKE UP!!!

6. Not Using Contracts to Cover Your Butt (Benefit)

7. Not Setting Deadlines for Projects - Last minute always the most "Exited"

8. Doing Spec Based Work ('If you like my design then you pay, if don't like then....)

9. Not Asking for a Down Payment before Starting a Project

10. Using Poorly Designed Fonts from Free Font Sites *Free what *PLEASE LESS DO THIS!!!

11. Using Display Fonts as Text Fonts

12. Using the Comic Sans Font (*Using Comic Sans Font is not a bad choice, if you you for the right purpose)

13. Using too Many Different Fonts in One Design

14. Forgetting White Space is your Friend

15. Not Sketching Before Designing

16. Not Using Rulers on Screen

17. Relying Totally on the Computer, Especially for Kerning or other detail measurement

18. Using Photoshop Filters After Your First 4-6 Months

19. Using Low Resolution Web Images for Print

20. Not Designing Logos in Vector Format

21. Making Logos Unable to Reproduce Well Small

22. Forgetting to Learn Keyboard Shortcuts

23. Not Saving Frequently

24. Not Backing up Files on an External Hard Drive or CD/DVD

25. Stealing or ‘borrowing’ Other Peoples Work

26. Using the dash quotation marks instead of true quotation marks.

27. Not Getting Enough Sleep ! Stop Drinking so much COFFEE... and probably Tongkat ALI too!


Remark*
But remember rules can be broken... after all Design does not SAID you HAVE to do only
this and that, just judge the situation and be flexible. Correct me if I'm wrong...

"normally just browse through internet, maybe getting some free royalty
free photo of others hardwork, or even getting some copyright picture to "photoshop"
...time saving wat..but was actually lazy to set up the photograph scene".

33. Not able to collaborate/judge point of view between personal and general public, it can be different. By goldfries

*Graphic designers must know that what is NICE by graphic designer standard
MAY NOT be what's applicable to the eyes of the general public.

*Sometimes simple / solid background is still better than those with super mix
of colors and textures.

btw setting deadline is probably half the time impossible. i usually get stuff like "oh i need this within the week".

WTH. i lost a lot of sleep 1st week of the year rushing for a lot of graphic work. some more people holiday and they need it ready, some more down in JB.

on the good side i get some travel + $$$$ for that project la. but still, countless clients come with last minute.

it's not designer problem in most cases.

client clever to go without planning. if not also they tell you earlier, but after you submit your design they take a really long while before they come back to you. then rush again.

Agree...hope this "recycle" will change 1 day... really sometime want to change design industry. Design world... if you don work smart, you just same as "kuli",

Anyway... my philosophy is work hard 1st, eventually something good will comeby, this is what I believe and keep me going... (hope I don get sleep at kaki lima 1 day by bliving this philosophy) ahahaha

i actually got a bit tired of the design industry............. ok well sometimes i think like that la, when you know la THAT type of client come by.

one that's so hard to express him/her self and everything thrown at them also not getting close.

BUT better still is before everything start they don't know what they want. want to limit # of design per fee also not good, we can but question is how far can it go?

don't limit then face that nonsense lor. i have clients like that, design simple also not nice, complex not nice. somewhere in the middle also not nice balblablaa............

then of course there's the other type of client, my favourite - 1st design like already. give them another 2 - 3 more also nmind they straight like.

oh wait, i'm complaining? ok maybe, it's one of the the thing that causes point #25.

funny thing is that the 25 points don't mention anything on COLOR related matters. the list looks like a mix of DESIGN bad habits + RUNNING DESIGN BUSINESS bad habits. 2 totally different things actually.

for example, asking for DP is not just confined to graphic industry.

Emm now you mention it, maybe I should change the title abit

Well I can add up more points, if its relevant and benificial for the LYN members, so do you have any simple point for bad habit regarding colour scheme? then ill write behind the sentence, contributed by... (the person that share out their point of view) what do you think?

thats the part i envy u goldfries... u got extra $$$ and travel by doing rush work. i got taxi claim (which is ~20) for OT a week ):


even i work smart, client work "stupid" and they think they are right. and guess what, designers suffer from their stupidity. just because their boss go hawaii for 3 days trip doesn't mean they can cut my production time by half.



yea... guess what, i have to get a flash website done within 1.5 days, from JPEG and incomplete design to finish product (luckily it is static with a bit of interaction =__=). *having fun being crazy before cranky*


back to topic, let me contribute a few more points.

Recently I having 1 of your Point of 'Not understanding the marketing idea, objective and mechanics. ' Causes too stress been rush by my client plus the fees they given me is like Big Roti Canai, but serve with a drop of Sambal and Darl... really lack of motivation to "understanding the marketing idea, objective and mechanics" for them... haizzz but still hav to do nicely n keep the professionalism!! CHEERS!

i can understand that feeling. however, with my personal experience, knowing their marketing direction will definitely reduce the amount of changes and better progress. i learn this in a hard way so now i'm always ask for the marketing direction, what kind of mood / message to deliver to what audience, what is the media buy? what is the enviroment of the viewer? in the bus? LRT? bus stop? magazine? each of them will affect the way we create our design.

it also give u a solid reason to sell ur design, and it makes u a better professional cheers.

Another good remind there (will add in the list, will simplified a bit cos quiet long can?),

That is what I do sometime, when time is not enough for rushing work or client paying a tight budget, but recently I try avoid doing that, its not so healthy for the designer habit and mind " too relying on FREE peoples's sources, it will cripple our creativity and will of create something original"

Well in other hand we may learn from it too, just need to justify which is beneficial for ourself
