Special thanks to the LYN members that have engaged my services. I have decided to omit your usernames to protect your privacy. Cheers!
Also,
Due to the high number of queries I have received in my message box, I have decided to compile a general FAQ for your benefit:
EDITED FOR CLARITY
F.A.Q.
Q: Do you handle just proofreading?A: Yes, I do.
Q: Do you handle brochures, pamphlets or even user manuals?A: Yes, I do. If given a choice, I'd choose not to handle user manuals because it is too taxing on my time. (in terms of opportunity cost)
Q: How about handling SEO?A: I do not specialize on SEO techniques per se, but I am sufficiently qualified to produce SEO articles.
Q: Do you accept payment through PayPal?A: Yes, though that is mostly reserved for (non-Malaysian) foreign clients.
Q: There is tax through my method of payment. Will you absorb it?A: If the tax resulted from my requested means of payment, I would be willing to absorb it. Otherwise, you would have to find an alternative. I am willing to negotiate on this.
Q: I decided to engage your services. How do I go about contacting you?A: I can be reached via a number of ways. The information for these will be PMed to you upon your request and confirmation of the job award.
Q: How much do you charge for your services? (very common question)A: I cannot give a fixed figure to cover all services under the sky. However, I can share with you the factors that influence pricing:
1. Volume of work
2. Scope of work
3. Level of research / detail required
4. Urgency / Deadline
5. Number of restrictions (by client)
6. Work is templated or not
7. Ad-hoc job or long term contract
8. Copyright issues
Q: Can you write me a publication article for RM$15?A: No. Sorry, I am not a charity.
Q: If I engage your services, can I expect you to respond to me at 2AM in the morning?A: Not anymore. I used to do that, but I found that it is far too taxing and non-productive for my liking.
Q: Then what are your work hours?A: I accept incoming jobs from 9am ~ 8pm. My official work hours however, are from 9am ~ 5pm.
Q: When is the cut off time for delivery?A: 12 noon. Any orders or requests that come in after 12 noon will only be processed the following day.
Q: Do you do exclusivity?A: No. My services are available to all. As such, I do not hire myself out exclusively to any specific writing project of any duration unless the agreed sum is significant.
Q: Why won't you consider an exclusive contract? I am willing to pay double the going rate...A: Thank you. While I am flattered by the offer, I apologize in advance. I have other clients that I will lose contact with if I "disappear" for too many weeks in a row. Should that happen, the subsequent loss in terms of potential revenue would be far greater than your project would probably be worth.
Q: Are there no exceptions to exclusivity?A: There have been cases of exclusivity. However, in most situations, it would appear that only MNCs with significantly large budgets would be willing to part with that kind of "unnecessary" money to make it worth the while. Having said that, it is not about the promised sum of money. This is more a matter of opportunity cost.
Q: You keep mentioning about opportunity cost. How does that factor in for you?A: As a rule of thumb, for every client I turn down today, I lose about 5 to 8 times in terms of value from future project opportunities from that same client. This is based on experience.
Q: Just curious. What are the going rates for exclusivity by MNCs offered to you in the past?A: I have experienced up to 30 to 40 times the going rate.
Q: Can you handle business proposals?A: Yes I can, and yes I have done so on many occasions. Especially for MNCs. A business proposal (be it for franchising, JV, GG, AI, VC or simple partnerships) can be done up as requested.
Q: Why do MNCs bother hiring you when they have (insert number here) people to work for them?A: A lot of materials that I handle for my clients are strictly P&C and come only on a strict referral basis. A lot of these proposals often never make it through the chain of management but instead are directed to that specific individual or individuals only. Once the major bulk of the report or proposal is approved, it is then passed on to their internal staff for term improvement and confirmation of facts with research houses and lawyers.
Q: Do you handle translations?A: No. Unfortunately, at this point, I do not offer translation services. All of the work done is in English only.
Q: Are you all right if I take your work and have it translated on my own?A: Once the materials are transferred to the client, it is up to them to do with it as they please. I have experienced situations where the client further edits the content (even after delivery) prior to publishing.
