OMG My scorpion gave birth! What should I do????!!!!
Most of the scorpion available in the pet trade are mostly wild caught or being keep communally
It's not odd to find that your Scorpion suddenly gave birth after keeping it for 1year because their gestation period can range from 8-13months depending on their diet, environment and other factors
So this is what I do when I notice my Scorpion gave birth last year

Step1: Leave the mom alone until she finish giving birth
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step2: To feed or not to feed?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step3: Separating the scorpling
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

They are still quite fragile in 2nd instar and tend to die when they molt to 3rd instar
The key is to keep the substrate damp (Not wet!) and make sure your scorpling is hydrated to keep them survive
With this method i have successfully raised 30 scorpling to 2nd instar out of 31 scorpling, 1of them died cause felt from the mom's back

FAQ
Can I feed my scorpling before they molt?

When can i start feeding my scorpling?

What should I feed to my scorpling?

Disclaimer:
This method is only apply for Heterometrus and Pandimus Sp, for other sp, they need different care

Captive breeding is the process of breeding rare or endangered species

wat sp. we nid to preserve them?

if they are really rare or endangered species we cant simply get them and do captive breeding

If im not mistaken result of inbreeding scorpion is not as bad as in mammal
Once in a while, new blood line shld be introduce
And i heard inbreeding cause the number of offspring to decrease
Not really sure bout tat

Captive breeding can mean breeding any animal captively so we can release them back to the nature or we can have supply of certain species without taking them from the wild

for now we are still hard to make the captive breeding

we dont nid to breed the AFS and liocheles coz we can see them everywhere

my fren and i are now trying had on centruroides magaritatus

lester's Orthochirus S.Negebensis are 2 female, cant do mating

i think ryo should save his 10 Hottentotta Hottentotta and breed them

Basically from wat i know cross breeding between same genus is possible
Going over the genus border line is not possible cause the operculum opening does not fit the spermatophore from other genus
But dun quote me, i din really research on it as im not interested in creating a "un-pure" creature

QUOTE
There is 7 reports done by scorpilogists of different species starting the mating dance, 4 of which from different genera. Only 2 was an actual spermatophore dropped, between a Euscorpius and Androctonus pair. In the Androctonus pair (A. australis male x A. maurectanicus female) there was 42 hybrid young produced.

BUT, A. austalis and A. maurectanicus do NOT meet in the wild at any given time, their distrubition does not over lap. So while it HAS happened, it won't happen in the wild.

Scorpions also just "know" that even if they did hyrbidize in the wild, that it would not be sucessful. i.e. matrality, serility, or decreased fitness of hybrid offspring. This is Postzygotic barriers.

And prezygotic barriers are things about the mating itself/where the scorpion comes from. i.e. speices specifc pheromones, anatomical characteristics, courtship behavior, and differences in seasonal phenology range and habitat.

So you can do it in capitivty, but it will never happen in their natural habitat. And if it doesn't happen naturally, I don't see the point of making happen in captivity.

And spacehawk, I think Brian means if you make a B. jacksoni/B.gigas hybrid it will eventually breed again and soon there will be as many hybrids as pure B.jacksoni and B. gigas. So if you *do* hyrbidize, at least don't sell the young and don't breed them again. If you cross breed it should be only for a scintific stand point, and even at that I do not agree with it 100%.
