Hey there, just converted to Ubuntu 9.04 from WIndows XP since my main HDD died and i'd have to reinstall the OS anyway, might as well try something new, plus, my mobile phone is actually running on Linux by default. Been eyeing on Linux for quite some time now, just that I can't find a reason to install it... until today.

anyway, firstly, the default Network Manager was not able to connect to my home's wifi router with a hidden SSID. Managed to get through that by DLing Wicd and that solved the problem.

another thing is that I can't seem to install my graphic drivers. under System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers, it managed to detect that I am using an Nvidia card and offers to download and install the 3D accelerator driver, but when I press activate, it tries to download and install but fails to do so coz of some errors. Because of that, I can't seem to enable any visual effects.

Firefox also have some funky fonts for browsing LYN, have not tested other forums yet. Previously on XP, I was using IE8 as my main browser, with FF as a backup browser and when I was using FF on XP, the fonts were definitely not this funky.

Please guide me in Linux-ing, dear SIfus notworthy.gif

edit: and oh yeah, just noticed i can't scroll by clicking on the scroll wheel and moving the mouse like i did on IE8 and FF in XP. Any ideas on that? icon_rolleyes.gif

edit2: my bad, found out that all i had to do was enable autoscrolling.

Easiest way for a new user is to install ubuntu-restricted-extras.
To do that, open a terminal, (menu-->systems-->console) and type in
"sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras" (without the quotation marks)
when queried, type in the password that you used during installation.
Be patient, it may take some time to download everything. (fonts, flash, music, dvd, music and movie codecs).

Added on June 27, 2009, 12:16 amAlso, don't forget to "sudo apt-get update"
When this is completed, follow with "sudo apt-get upgrade"
Note all this (including restricted-extras) can be done by using 'synaptic' gui.
But I think using the terminal is faster and easier. And it is ok if you disagree.

To Install nvidia driver,

you can go to system --> administration --> Synaptics Package Manager

and install "nvidia-glx-180" or recommended driver at Hardware drivers. If it say 177 for example, install "nvidia-glx-177"

Pease reboot your laptop after installation.

Launch Synaptic Package Manager, look under the Settings Menu and choose Repositories.

Click on Add and select the Multiverse Repositories.

It will take awhile to load the new repositories.

Type 'msttfcorefont' in the 'Quick search' box

Mark it for Installation and choose Apply.

so far i think aMSN is the most successful msn clone you can find in linux, you could also try out a few more IM like 'kmess' or 'pidgin'..

for conky setup, you may refer to this

yea, done up my Conky yesterday.

btw, what media player do you guys use?

i'm using Audacious now which resembles Winamp and the song skips(pause for 1 sec then continue) quite often, like when i'm scrolling a page in FF, opening an app etc. plus, it takes like 7%+ of my cpu usage!

trying to find a media player which is less of a resource hogger than audacious. any suggestions?

tried xfmedia but can't get it to run. it just quits when i start the app.

amarok and rythmbox also uses up too much CPU.

last time when i was on windows, i was using Winamp. xmms looks like the perfect one but its out of the repository sad.gif

tried to install during this guide but encountered the error as followed when the installation was about to end.

CODE
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

and yes, i did use the sudo command.

any solutions? or other players which does not stutter nor taking up lotsa cpu?

nope, synaptic ain't running..

double confirmed that by logging out and back in.

and i think i solved the sound stuttering problem. the PulseAudio priority was extremely low, set to 19 sweat.gif

re-set the priority to normal and everything's running better now lol...

oh yea, using Exaile as my default audio player now lol...

uses on average <5% cpu usage. have pretty much everything i want lol.

sudo apt-get gmusicbrowser

and usually purist do not mixed up kde or xfce library into gnome, vice versa (to minimize libraries) imho.

Okay, remove /var/lib/dpkg/lock
try again. (it's ok, you can remove lock, be in root to remove.)
if problem persist, your dpkg file is probably in error, download again.
check if you have any lock files (though you didn't mention) in /var/cache/apt
remove that also (again, it's ok)

Also, what dpkg file is this? xmms? I dun think ubuntu uses that anymore, so it may need some
things that clash with some other apps, maybe amarok?
Yeah, I liked xmms, but I think amarok is way way better.
General thumb of rule, most things can be found in official repo's.
Downloaded dpkg may sometimes clash. Good websites will tell you if your version of distro is recommended.

xmms? try install xmms2 "sudo apt-get install xmms2"
ps: I didn't use it, loved amarok now.

tried xmms2. xmms2 doesn't come with a GUI doh.gif

have to get an xmms2 client seperately lol.

anyway, since xmms is out of reach, guess Exaile is the best for my pc smile.gif
