Hi. I tried to google what it means by "gear stripping" and it turns out to be something to do with fast focusing and the lens etc? Do you mind elaborate it further coz I am really new into DSLR.

Is it a very serious problem?

Thanks.

I tried switching on the camera just now and the problem still persists. I must say that the sound is so loud that I am utterly petrified now! I can even feel the vibration while holding the camera! I hope it won't spoil the sensor sad.gif(((

Very sad. Why Sony fail on me?

yup, can be considered as serious problem, if u let it without sending for warranty claim, it will disabled the AF function in the lens..then u need to MF lor..

I saw this link. This is for a700. Got pic/diagram of some gears. Maybe your case similar to that. The teeth of the gear strip.

the cause? actually our kitlens built from plastic, so it cant last long..another factor is the camera itself always hunting for the AF point, the gear work hard to search for the AF point..

i think the way to prolong the gear life is always start focusing from 18mm to 70mm, not focusing at 70mm all the time, this will let the camera work too hard searching for the AF point..

mine also stripped edi after 6 month using it..

u can send back to sony service center if ur camera still in warranty period

usually not the teeth of the gear, but the parts that hold the gear broken..thats from what i observed from some of my friends' lens, mine included.

I found this from the internet:

Is this what it means by stripped gear?

The camera does not produce such sound when I remove the lens and turn it on. Seems like it really has got something to do with the lens.

I hope Sony Centre can fix this sad.gif

SpOOkY: Oh yeah! Forgot that. Different combos for different countries.

lj0000: I can assure you that it is hard to create a picture that shows the unevenness of the aperture blades.

HiroBoroi: Nope, the gear stripping happens on the lens. It happens to plasticky lenses which have plastic geartrains - the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO and Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG non-HSM are particularly prone to gear stripping.

According to International Camera, it also happens on Nikons (not sure if they meant Sigma on F mount, or Nikkors...)

LeoDaVinci: That's exactly it, the picture! That is a stripped gear.

went to Sony Center Wisma Merdeka, KKinabalu today and found that they have the A330. Handled it... although the body is small but not that point that I would not consider it as my potential 1st DSLR camera. I think, in time... my hands/fingers would get used to handling it.

Now waiting for payment (enough money) so that I'll be able to get me my first DSLR. I would definitely consider the A330... smile.gif

I think tomorrow will go to the other Sony Shop in Karamunsing Complex to see if they already hv the a330. Id like to play around with it more icon_idea.gif
