Invision Power Services is the company that is providing the software. However, Invision Power Board isn't free; a good open source alternative would be phpBB 3. I still think that IPB is easier to use and has more features though.

As for the main page, the software is Mambo. Should be free and open source software afaik.

Lowyat.NET (or LYN in short) is a Malaysian tech enthusiast community founded in November 19, 2002 by Vijandren Ramadass. As of July 2008, Lowyat.NET is ranked by Alexa as the 23rd most viewed site in Malaysia[1] and the most popular IT-related discussion board in Malaysia.[2]

The website takes its name from Low Yat Plaza, a leading shopping complex in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, commonly associated with the sales of technology-related merchandise.

Hi, I stumbled on this thread, so I will offer some insights which I hope will help.

Mambo came first, then the developers had some big disagreement and some started Joomla. Right now Joomla is better developed and has lots of forum support, and the latest version is Joomla 1.5.14 - www.joomla.org
You can start a website and use the numerous plug-ins/extensions for other things like forums, shopping cart & so many more.

Hope that helps...

Yes, that right... I also had build my webside using the Joomla platform.. so far i easy to handle just that not convinience with joomla v1.5 coz the platfor is to heavy and may take loong time to load if visitor using the low speed internet connection (my target not even for broadband but dail-up as well).

there is some similar platform for forum just like these lowyat forum that you can use for free.. try use SMF forum...

SMF is not as good as PHPBB. I would recommend you to go for PHPBB3.
