You can try MailEnable for Windows system which comes in three Editions. The Standard Edition is a freeware with reduced features compared to other Editions. And, you need to set up it as a local service like you set up Kerio or Microsoft Exchange (it is not on-site or hosted like Zimbra)

Zimbra is good if you want something comprehensive that is free and very professionally done. It looks easy to setup because all the needed software packages like apache and MTA components are included. Though I have never used it, from what I read it's only good things about this product.

For windows based, you can try MailEnable which is quite good for the free version. Comes with it's own webmail also.

As for Kerio, I have used it before and I find it very good too. You said about it being free? But AFAIK, there are no free version. Only 30 days trial. You using old version?

If you like google apps for ur organization , zimbra will be the right choice. You can choose to host it in house or at server center.
