"F1 driver's" bid to cart off ATM foiled
By ANDREW SAGAYAM
SUBANG JAYA: A man dressed like a Formula One driver repeatedly rammed a forklift into an ATM booth at a petrol station, but abandoned the “smash-and-grab” effort after his machine got stuck in a glass panel.
A closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) footage showed the man, in an all-white jump-suit and full-faced helmet, speeding towards the station in Serdang Jaya and ramming his forklift into the booth’s glass panel for about 10 minutes.
“However, as soon as the alarm went off, the man panicked and left the forklift that was stuck in the panel,” said Subang Jaya police chief Asst Comm Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar.
He said the petrol station was closed during the 3.45am incident yesterday.
ACP Zainal Rashid said that when the petrol station owner opened his business at 7am, he alerted the police, who seized the forklift and viewed the CCTV footage.
“Nothing was stolen from the station.”
He urged those with information on the incident to call the Selangor Rakan COP hotline at 03-2052 9999, SMS to 32728 or call the Subang Jaya police headquarters at 03-89484822.
In another development, ACP Zainal Rashid said police recovered RM500 and six handphones from three men held for robbing six businesses in Puchong in an hour-long robbery spree on Tuesday.
In a raid on Friday night, police arrested the trio, aged between 20 and 23, in a flat in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.
One of the suspects stabbed himself thrice in the abdomen in a suicide bid when police moved in.
The gang, armed with parangs, robbed 11 people at restaurants and a hotel in a crime spree that began at 5.30am.
