I use SharePod. A simple program to backup music from or copy music into your iPod.

What application do you intend to use? It might differ, but if you use MediaMonkey or Sharepod, you do not need to restore it back to factory setting (if that what you meant by 'restoring back').

However, when you sync your Ipod with other applications, the media library in your Ipod will be differ from the library in the itunes. If you open the itunes after you sync-ed with other applications (thus different library), itunes will let you know that your ipod library is differ from what you have in itunes and will ask you whether you want to sync back with itunes library. If you did, whatever changes you make in the ipod library with other application will be reverted back to itunes library.

The best thing if you did sync using other application than itunes (or even different itunes, like your frens itunes for example, you use Sharepod to make a copy of your ipod library into the computer. Then you can add that copy into your itunes library and sync it with your ipod afterwards.

sorry, if its too long.

you can get the sharepod here, Sharepod Website

hope that helps, pm me if u need more help

foobar2k is the alternative solution. Installed the ipod plugin and try to get to know it.

if you are using mediamonkey for your ipods, do not install itunes 9, it will break the mediamonkey (fail to launch after itunes 9 installed).
