Owning Sennheiser IE8 for couple months with more than 600hours burning, I start to realize something is missing as my perfect IEM. In fact I am now more recognize what SQ that I am looking for after auditioned many high end IEMs & cans like SE530, W3, ER4P, IE6, HD650, K701, Denon D5000, MS Pro, DT880, DT990 & etc.
Basically what I like most about IE8 is its bass & soundstage. Its mid bass is punchy, impactful & quite fast (not yet fast enough), but most significant thing I like is its bass decays/ripple effect. Bass always has ripple effect & which IMO making the soundstage enormous, just like an echo travelling in big hall. On the other hand, its soundstage is biggest I had ever heard in any IEM. This effect is shine most when I listening to some live tracks.
What is missing? IMO IE8 is shorthanded in instrument separation & clarity. Overwhelming bass always trade off the mid/high clarity, which is sunken by the bass. Although the min bass knob configuration is good, improve the mid/high pretty much, but not good enough.
How I realize this issue? One fine day when I encountered one local company which doing custom IEM. They provide me a good chance to audition their own dual BA driver custom IEM, although the isolation is not be best (due it is belong to one of the guys which coincidence his ear canal is small, so I can fit into my ear canal w/out much issue), for the 1st time I convinced & realize what is lacking in my IE8. Its clarity & music separation blew me away, which much better than ER4P; to my surprise its bass are pretty good too. Then I started to discuss with them about making me one custom IEM; my SQ configuration will be IE8 bass/soundstage with enhance mid/high & instrument separation. Then they told me they are experimenting Quad BA driver custom & might fit into my request. So this is how my custom IEM journey begins.
FYI this is a small company but it well equipped with all those necessary gadget to make a good quality custom IEM & most important they are very experience in this field. Basically their business nature includes
1. Custom shell remold,
2. Custom shell for your favorite BA universal IEM with additional BA driver depending on circumstances,
3. Customize tips for universal IEM,
4. Ear impression on site,
5. Recently their own creation, their own custom IEM (custom dual drivers)
6. Others (For more info you PM me for more info)
After 2weeks waiting & constant communication, at last I receive my Quad Custom on 5/24. The workmanship on shell is phenomenal & exactly according to my drawing design. I am speechless when I put into my ear for the 1st time. It is the best ever IEM I had ever audition before. I am always worry custom always has marginally improvement from the top universal IEM (normally <10%). But this much more than that, I can say it is at least 40% better.
How can I get his figure? Ok it is simple. I separate SQ into 5 categories: Bass, Mid/High, Soundstage, Music Separation & Isolation (each contribute 20% portion). So Quad Custom improve in Mid/High, Music Separation & Isolation, so it is 60% better but Bass has lack of ripple effect (this is limitation of BA driver can’t help it) -10%, then Soundstage is slightly smaller than IE8, -10%. So total up 60%-10%-10%=40%.
Here is my simple rigs setup:
Cowon D2 (no EQ setup)> fiio E5 (no bass booster)> Quad Custom / IE8
*I am using IE8 (minimum bass knob mode) as my benchmark/comparison >my IE8 has marked 600+hours burning so far & Quad Custom has touch 50+hours mark.
Sound Quality:
Bass:
It is super fast, very impactful & deep. Bass notes are easily notice & well pronounced (I can said its bass it very accurate). IMO it is punchier than IE8, but only lack my favorite ripple/decay effects. This is the different between Dynamic & Balance Armature Driver. This is a trade off.
Quad Custom bass really excel in Eminem’s songs like Without Me/Cleaning My Closet & Michael Jackson – Billie Jeans (very very fast & impactful).
Mid/High:
This is where Quad Custom shines the most. It totally blew IE8 away at these categories. It is sweet, precise & mellow but no sibilance. I do find IE8 has some sibilance issue in certain tracks.
Superior clarity is due the bass driver as enclose in separate room in the shell, so no side effect of the bass. Electric guitar distortion & drum cymbals never sound so good & clear before.
I am really like Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away electric guitar distortion sound which is pronounce very clearly & realistic, & to my surprise those bass notes are so clear & obvious too but didn’t sink the mid/treble. Now I feel IE8 is muffled in this case.
Soundstage:
Quad Custom is come close to IE8; IE8 ripple effect makes its soundstage sound slightly bigger. I can really feel the big concert open space in LP Road to Revolution Live Album with IE8.
Instrument Separation:
Another Quad Custom strongest point, every instrument can be heard clearly & precisely. I can pin point the locations much better than IE8. I really like Hotel California Live & G3 Live concert tracks with Quad Custom, a brand new listening experience that I never have before. With IE8, which I had separation & sibilance issue in Linkin Park Road to Revolution Live album, but it is solve in Quad Custom.
Isolation:
It is so obvious, normally with IE8 I need to use high volume to minimize the annoying plane sound whenever air travel. With Quad Custom, I just use less 40% volume I used to be. Best part is when the music is playing I can’t even listen to people talking beside me. This is benefit of custom shell.
Verdicts:
Definitely is a best upgrade option for universal high end IEM. On par with other famous brand custom IEM with very affordable price, this is big bang for the bucks. With its top-notch customer service, many services available in 1 house & ready to listen to your opinion for improvement, this is what u looking for in any product purchase.

This is their Dual Drivers Custom IEM that I auditioned at their factory.
