I think the shot would be nicer with a tighter crop. Maybe 20-30% closer.

It sure does.

On a side note, I really must warn newcomers to photography that photos are not all about narrow depth of field (bokeh). The essence is composition. having a f/1.4 lens doesn't grant you good looking photos automatically. Randomly taking photos and shooting them at very wide aperture settings doesn't make the photo appealing if the composition is crap. I think many have came across photos from a member who enjoys shooting at f/1.2 all the time with one of the more exclusive/expensive/high end lens, but not all the shots were appealing. Some were an eye sore with such narrow/shallow depth of field. Some shoot at wide aperture because they wanna show off their expensive gear. It's really pointless.

It's also unfortunate that a number of newcomers are easily blinded/poisoned/tricked/hypnotized/deceived by "bokeh" and straight away put wide aperture primes in their wishlist. Some go as far as thinking that a DSLR is meant for taking bokeh shots only. Those wide aperture primes are really expensive and you should spend your money wisely. If you can afford it, you don't need to think twice about it and you shouldn't need to contemplate at all. However, once budget is a concern, don't bother spending your live savings and just get a more affordable prime lens like the f/1.8. You must weigh the price to how often you shoot at wide open.

Just my 2 cents.

yea DOF is important... but still nice when shooting portrait(if at right dof)..other stuffs with good bokeh might be good too. It really depends on the situation of whether u need shallow dof or not. I still prefer i have a 1.4 lens because i can increase or decrease the aperture as i like. If can afford it...go ahead..if not 1.8 is juz nice too.

Yeah, to be honest newcomers (like me) are easily get poisoned by those 1.4 1.8 lenses. The other things that can easily poisoned are those flashguns. But so far as I concerned, later they will poisoned with those long range telephoto lenses. There goes my money laugh.gif

But I think we should spend on dry cabinet first rite? doh.gif

1.8 lens is a good option for tight budget. you can use it to familiarize DOF level with it smile.gif

70-200VR ofcoz more expensive than the 70-300VR

Coz the 70-200VR has a fix aperture value(F2.8) through out the entire zoom range whereas the 70-300VR has an aperture value of f/4.5-5.6G and that's the big different.

Needless to say both quality of the lens is different in terms of build and the optical quality.

Google around and you'll see a lot of good comment on the 70-200VR, you won't go wrong with it if u got the budget.
