This thread is so confusing, haha.
It depends if your current modem can support router(nat) mode, if so, then you just need to get a normal 5 port/8 port switch, cost less than 100 bucks.
If your current modem cannot support router mode, then you need to get a router to get the job done, since you are going to share the Internet, then get a router with some switch ports.
Uh, even switches has high end and low end switch.

True, even good switches cost more then routers, i was quoted a linksys managed switch for around RM1.7K for a 24 port gigabit rack mounted switch, or was it 2.5K?

Yep..Get an Ethernet home router to set up a simple home network to share the Internet connection, also the modem should have RJ45 port (not the USB port, you cannot connect the modem with USB port only to router). To understand more, can take a look on this
Ethernet home network setup tutorial.

router and switch are not same, most router completed with switch function and more intelligence when transfer data. Get a router if you hope for simple config, as home user.

most of the new modem comes with router mode includ TM modem. Home user need the router mode for Auto-connect and DHCP.
recommended: get a wireless router-modem

Simple answer
Router got own IP, Switch don
Hence, if u wan to connet to internet n share the connetion, u need a router
If u just wan to lan few PCs together for gaming or file sharing, buy a switch
the switch tat cost few k is not meant for home user, there is switch priced around rm50, with 6 ports, if i m not wrong.
anyway i recommend router, coz it oni cost slightly higher, and provide more functions, lik QoS etc
however there is fewer ports in router, price being equal, somthing u hav to sacrifise in exchange of the functions of routers =.=
router is more intelligence, switch and repeater is almost the same, just that switch can do VLAN, repeater don.

not really~
since he has a modem and if it doesnt support router mode, mean he have to manually connect to internet in XP.
