40GB is going to be discontinued. Not the 80GB.

I watched the E3 Live Sony Press Conference, so I know about this.

First of all, thats the OLD 80GB which is discontinued already in Singapore. Pretty damn old news by today. Thats the 80GB which came with the SIXAXIS controller.

Now recently, its been "revived" again with the MGS4 bundle but with a DS3 controller instead of the SIXAXIS. However this bundle is only available officially in the US right now.

The 80GB coming out in September is a core-pack which comes with a DS3, will replace the current 40GB SKU at the same price point. This SKU will be worldwide.

come to think of it, besides saving cost by not putting the EE in current PS3s, Sony can still sell PS2s and its games..another victory for capitalism!

They have to discontinue so the customer won't confuse between the 'old' 80GB with PS2 backward compatibility and the 'new' 80GB without PS2 backward compatibility (same function as 40GB but only the HDD is 80GB)

I think that's the first gen PS3 with PS2 game compatibility

It's second Gen PS3 actually...first Gen are the 60GB and 20GB PS3s...

this is the same SKU of the current 40 gb, only sawpped with bigger hdd.

how about the backward compatibility? still cannot play ps2 games?

i think so...but do u hv many ori ps2 games lying around to play? furthermore for ps2 games it's has to be the same according to the ps3 region.

Already said this is the said that this is the SAME SKU as the PS3 40GB version just with a larger HDD. So obviously, no BC for PS2 games.
