Im still thinking how u get the right angle for ur tweeter positioning..? some say need to do a crossed angle, some say need directly make the tweeters to directly hit ur ears.. rclxub.gif ..

so any suggestion?
heavencloud
err.... not sure what is crossed angle but one thing i'm pretty sure, don't put the tweeters direction facing to u, (given if u had the crossover installed with the tweeters) or u end up suffer the direct high frequency sound produced by it x_x

I did it before right after i installed my ICE and end up can't turn the volume loud coz the tweeter was 'shooting' my ears badly

or maybe becoz my components set was cheap after all? tongue.gif
nkphnx
Because high frequencies are very directional, you can try facing the tweeters towards the roof at an angle so that sound reflects off it back to the cabin.. this also takes some of the harshness away...
jceh83
cross angle means to direct the tweeter to face the center...usually to face the tweeters to the rear-view mirror or center of the car for sound staging purposes...

i dun think directing the tweeters directly to our ears are good also altho some people do tat..
hushymushy
first of all....do u know what is the xover frequency cut offs?
second....doesnt matter where ur tweets should point...
ultimately...u hv to get a reference cd with accurate imaging...
then only u can start adjusting ur tweeters....u mids are not coming up to dash maybe caused by ur tweeters louder than d mids...
level matching is not there

alot of reasons...going active may solve ur problem..but not entirely...
i've gone from passive to active and back to passive now...
no issues with imaging and staging....
athlonxp
just a tips here..

if your tweeter cut off freq is low..let say 3khz or 3.5khx..u can place it quite far from the mid bass and still get good soung

if it is high like 5khz..u need to be sure it was not too far from the mid bass..if not it will sound very separate and weird

2 common tweeter placement are on axis and off axis..

i place mind shooting the center of the roof..

some people place it high on A pillar to get good staging
craziechild
i think this topic is very subjective to the types of tweeter that you are using...

pass experience,

metal dome tweeters: i place them high up on the a-pillar somewhere till my ear level while the left tweeter faced my left ear and the right side faced the passenger's right ear... result was good... harshness was minimized while the staging was high enough...

then i change to soft dome: using the same angle... i found that my staging is too close to me... even how i cut the freq, adjust the gain... still they are too close... then i place then deep into the dashboard on the a-pillar faced where still the angled like before towards the ear thing and upwards to the rear view mirror... results well staging not so high... but its very deep...

of all these two setup... my cross point had no real changes... only minimal changes that unless you have a diamond ear... then you will notice them...

so what tweeter are you using?

im still using stock rogers tweeters, soft dome now o.. i was wondering those ribbon tweeters, the sound a lot differences?

There's a saying goes 'one man's meat is another one's poison' & it's also the type of music one listen's to.
bafukie
some tweets perform better off axis and some on axis... juz gotta trial and error.
driftmeister
not only positioning matters
u gotta be on-phase too
my suggestion is get a proper tuning CD and move it slowly
StratOS
any songs or sounds u guys recommend to be used when doing this(positioning the tweeters)?

my favourite are iasca 2005 track 11

if u want i can send to u..pm me ur msn smile.gif
StratOS
PM'ed u already.. thanks.. any other songs?
kenlimfornication
Always use songs that you always listen to. So that, you have a clear image of how the song is supposed to sound like, it will be a lot easier for you to do the trial and error. Doesn't matter what genre or song.

For my own simplicity, I use a very sentimental, normal recording (non-bias), chinese mainstream pop song to do the basic tuning. And from there on, when I listen to other cd's I just need to do some minor fine tuning.

Edit : About on and off axis, it's all about trial and error.
StratOS
for vocal im currently using Bleeding Love and Better in Time by Leona Lewis lo..

If tune by yourself, trust your own ear...
mattchin
play wif time alignment if ur HU has tat function... center o driver imaging also can... lu suka.. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
StratOS
my hu no time alignment.. tats why selling it off and get a 9887 soon.. haha..
mattchin
what's de tag for 9887?
StratOS
now i think around rm 1200 can get oredy..
craziechild
my favourite centre image tuning song: Lara Fabian - I Guess I Loved You

anyway... IASCA imaging and staging tracks and Sheffeld Labs recording for further minor tuning...

btw... not always TA is the answer... for some people(including me) after TA they dun like the narrow staging... but some people dun mind... so listen to setup with TA and non TA before you decide on the HU...

cheers...
StratOS
craziechild know lor.. here not much people no play TA 1.. haha..
hushymushy
i prefer no TA at all.....sounds unnatural with TA

may i suggest Clarion HX-D2 if u wanna do TA. its better than alpine 9887.

SQ also better.

At this point, Alpine F1 is my vote. kekekekeke
Gary1981
Agree. It sounds unnatural & reduce in tonality. I was being fade up that i cant get the centre staging & play aroung wiht the TA, but now ignore TA setting. But somehow a sifu being advise me to increase the individual gain of the amp. By increase the right gain of the speaker...never tried it but any idea of it?
hushymushy
first of all...it depends on ur amp whether got individual gain for each of the driver...esp active setup

then have to perform level matching first.....u cant get accurate imaging if ur tweeters r over powering the mids in loudness

Did you check with him why this is necessary??
Ultima
i juz put my tweeters at the dashboard, facing 45 degrees to the roof, dunno suitable or not sweat.gif

some says put at the pillar will hav best result, is the diff noticable?
StratOS
i also place mine on the dash board as well.. saving up for the tweeter stand to put on the pillars soon..~

like i said earlier...doesnt matter where it points...
first is to know where is ur current imaging and staging...
then followed by how can u change in order to get the imaging and staging
athlonxp
how to make the staging higher without TA?
hushymushy
depends active or passive

passive got redo custom made passive

active ar...play around with tweets HP and mids LP

but all depends on speaker frequency response too

means the tweeter play lower the better?

like around 3khz high pass?
pisces
Before setting the HPF of your tweeters, it is very important to find out the FR.
Tune them too low will risk the tweeters's VC being damaged.
hushymushy
yup...agreed with Pisces....all speakers b4 any tuning...better check through the specs first....

for me....passive also no problem...kakakakakaka

aisey pisces...wanted to tell bout the Olympic opening oso...but ok lar...oredi cancelled...so can watch!

And before you come, pls make sure your speaker/amp connections:
for example channel 1 to left mid, channel 2 to right mid, channel 3 to left tweeter and channel 4 to right tweeter.
This is necessary if you have a phase problem and will make phase change for any speaker easier, instead of wasting time doing trial and error work.
I will do phase check everytime before fine tuning.

even the coil he winds it on his own
u can choose the caps quality

a real good passive xover may cost u bout 1.3k a pair

We normally have it at Kinrara Curry House, off Jalan Kuchai Lama on most Friday nights.
