Nope. The PS3 fans themselves are good enough.

i read somewhere that 80/60/20GB consumes more electricity and hence, emits more heat than the standard 40GB because of the different processors, is that true?

maybe it's true...but so far, my 80g set never fail on me..not even once
and for me, the heat they produce..it's more warmer than a hairdrier

if the PS3 can survive under sauna for several weeks and show no sign of mulfunction, why does it need a cooler?

As long as you take care of your machine, it won't get fried easily. Just put it on environment that is cooling. Dust is also another problem.

Yes because it's using smaller 65nm Cell chip and consequently a smaller heat pipe. It's great, because these changes make system more quite and reduce systems power requirements from 200 to 135 watts. But keep in mind, new PlayStation 3 40 GB has no memory card reader, only two USB ports, and no PS2 backward compatibility.

all electrical appliances perform better when cooled. take you pick, to have or not to have. don't have fan, good enough. have fan, better. have water cooling, (aiyak, buang duit!) THE BEST!

a fan is redundant on the ps3, except if u are operating on an exceptionally hot environment , like in the office of a iron forge then MAYBE.
