2. 3rd copy resides on DVD, which I'm only 25% through in burning them.

I guess you have to look through old photos now and then and be critical about which you'd wanna keep and which do not have any sentimental/keeping value. Shooting at RAW or Fine JPEG is gonna fill up them HDDs very very fast indeed.
|sorcerer|
stored it same with my other personal/work folder in hdd at office
then 1 copy of the folder goes into my external hdd which been updated every 6 month
the last 6 month copy of the external hdd will go to hdd in my home
my pc at home had 1 hdd that only stores backup of this folder

This is quite normal. When I was more 'on' to photography in the early years, every weekend I can produce 1-4 GB of photos... usually less than 1% is nice but heck, just store everything for posterity.

So 1 year has 52 weeks and 52 x (1,4) = (52, 208) GB!!

After 2 years plus of being a shutter bug, I have like 300+GB of shots.

Vodoo2k
wow... dunt have a systematic way yet... ermm online backup seems tempting...
hornetEJ
I'm having more than 70gb in one HDD now and have some scattered around different machines at home. In the process of centralizing all my pictures onto one HDD and then backup either on additional HDD or burning them into DVD.

LOL. Last time shoot with P&S, one month of backpacking only get 2gb of photos. Now shoot RAW, can easily reach 2gb with just a morning of shooting sweat.gif One day the HDD is going to reach its capacity.
valho
mine same with goldfries, 1 copy in my desktop HDD, another copy in my external HDD, still in the process of burning them into DVD. not to mention the final edited copy uploaded to Flickr

All high resolution RAW + JPEG photos starting from digital age are burn into DVDs...

Low resolution web size photos are stored in pbase.com

While printed copies are kept easily with A4 clear folder icon_rolleyes.gif

For those keeping photos are HDD. Be careful...

If there is some neuclear boom explosed near by... The EMT will burn off your computer and your HDD permanently. In this case, only CD/DVD that not sensitive to EMT will survice cool2.gif

i use film cameras. so the images are kept in rolls of negatives.
jaycee1
I use a NAS.

specifically a Dlink DNS 323. I have 2 500GBs in them on raid1. Its not much but its suffcient for now, and I got mirror protection....unless that theVOIP says...and EM charge goes off nearby. Which in the case, i suspect your photos collection would be the least of your worries..tongue.gif

I only keep like 10% out of the total shots anyway, and since I started DSLRing 6 weeks ago, 500gb for me will last quite a while....for now anyway.
fcbarcelona-my
DVD. my HDD cannot handle it anymore... especially now snap2 in RAW.

I still have a big box full of negatives. But I guess they are not going to last very long. Any idea how long? There was once I re-developed a few pictures, the color turns a bit yellowish. Not sure if this is because of the negative being old or not

yeah. last time use compacts and prosumer, still manageable.

after DSLR, snap even more. some cases use RAW, that's when the file size grow like crazy.

Photos stored on PC hard disk and then backup to one of my WD 500Gb myBook. Then manually syncing using a freeware program to sync the WD 500Gb myBook to a secondary WD myBook.

Have 3 copies of the latest work but planning to also archive them in DVDs. Currently awaiting for Blu-Ray burners to get cheaper and then use archivable 25Gb Blu-Ray discs. biggrin.gif
goldfries
yes, BR would be ideal. aihh. even the 4.7GB per DVD is not enough for me. smile.gif

Most viruses attack your system files, OS and stuff. So I usually partition harddisk, keep all the proggies and crap in C: while all data goes into D:. I can wipe C: many times and not break a sweat. Now a dead HDD is another totally different ballgame.
tytons
ive not got a single virus in 3 years..dun surf prawn..dun dl prawn..dun click silly obvious fishy links on msn..ull be safe..spyware n malware are quite easy to get rid..n most arent that harmful.i dun even use an anti virus

but i do think its good to save ur pics in .rar..as there are virus that attacts exe, chm, jpg, gif, zip, formats..not that many that attacts rar. or be more kiasu..rar it then change the extention to .x or something

haha. most of time now shoot in RAW. but for outing..snap2 JPEG. but since shoot2 in RAW..HDD space oso decrease instantly. tongue.gif
goldfries
1. browsing porn won't get you virus. it really depends on the site that you visit. not what kind of site it is.

2. virus are usually more focused on exe, com and most commonly MS Office files (people hate MS!) - rarely i see virus attack image files.

Will you be concerned about your photos if there is nuclear explosion nearby? I would flee for my safety. laugh.gif

I store my photos in 2 separate HDD.

I store my pictars in an external HDD and also in my internal HDD. smile.gif Have yet to back them up to DVDs.
-vip3rleon9-
Store mine in my HDD. Not the one with my OS tho. laugh.gif

my photos are all in films... but i can't vote on that sad.gif
Aoshi_88
Yet to backup my HDD to DVDs yet. I store my photos on my laptop HDD and an external WD 500GB.
raymannlucas
how? if someday ur HDD spoiled and lets say 500GB of photo all gone?

isnt it dvd safer?theres kind of dvd made especially for photo very long lasting one isnt it?
Aoshi_88
DVDs are still prone to failures. Especially CRC errors. Expose them to heat, sunlight and weather just wrecks havoc on the integrity of the DVD. There's no one true, perfect storage media.

I'll backup my data soon anyway.

Then also burn a copy onto DVD brows.gif

according to an article in the previous CHIP issue, DVD can only last for 5-10 years before it starts to corrode and become faulty... the best way would be tapes...thats for big companies lar of course biggrin.gif

for me i separate partitions and store my photos there while i have a 80gb external hdd and a backup..not yet do dvd burning..
raymannlucas
sigh...non is being kept for permanent... rolleyes.gif
