The names are confusing. Based on dpreview, the SD 870IS is the same as Ixus 860IS, and the SD 880IS is the same as Ixus 870IS.

I think what people mean here is the new Ixus 870IS which is new model from the Ixus 860IS in this thread.

IMO, the 860IS is an easier camera to use for most people. I chose it for the big screen, wide angle view and I don't require the viewfinder or additional manual controls. Easy for the whole family to use.

I think the 960IS has more manual controls, a smaller screen and a viewfinder, more for people who want to tweak their shots.

i am almost into 860IS.. also for the same reason 3" screen as most of the other features are almost the same except for the wide angle.

i was initially holding back on the 12mp but after hearing so many feedback that i dont actually require 12mp unless i am printing poster. this 1 clear. rclxms.gif

i was also undicided on the viewfinder which many of them said it's useful during the strong sunlight & at night which makes the screen useless when shooting picture. that's where the viewfinder comes in handy. can provide some info on this?? icon_question.gif

& the last thing is the 28mm vs 36mm. is wide angle really handy? there are many feedbackc on the distortion problem, if i do not want the trouble of manual adjusting using external software, can this be eliminated? icon_question.gif

would appreciate some guide.. new here..

yeap... wat sinclair said is true. u dun need a viewfinder for a PnS bcoz PnS used to see through LCD. if u wan manual control go for semi-pro as those camera like S5 IS and it is also very cheap at less than 1.5k...
n if u insist to see through viewfinder u also cannot see it clearly bcoz it is very very small.
my 1st PnS (IXUS 55) also hv a viewfinder but i never use it... u just spoil ur eyes

the viewfinder is too small to be usefull.. okay. but how about the problem that others pointed out where the LCD is almost impossible too look at when it's under the strong sunlight or at night. any experience on this?

u still can see but very dark... since u r so interest into photography u should buy a dslr rclxms.gif it is a total different experience
Brannix
yeah.. i am very interested into photography but am too newbie to produce picture work with dslr. will go for a compact one & slowly into dslr.

i recon the fun of dslr like what you said.. a totally different experience

Better get the new one methinks. Why not ask them to take back the DVD player and give more discount and other freebies like screen protector and 4GB SDHC card?

photos taken during trip to kundasang war memorial and pine resort in sabah. manual mode, just adjust exposure settings, iso 100,vivid colour. trying to get the exact exposure based on what i see during that time.

by the way.. i see some white spots all over on the night pic at genting.. what causes that? or that's normal??
e 3 h y 0 r
too high ISO i guess
sinclairZX81
The sky looks a bit grainy. What settings were you using for those shots?
e 3 h y 0 r
Manual = Infinity + ISO800
whats a better setting for this enviroment?
Vodoo2k
one thing for sure, my 860is is a life saver.. it took video where no normal man would venture.... my wife's 2nd son labor ordeal in full awesomeness... serious good video recording quality... it really captured the "feel" hehehehe. Hope my wife wont stumble upon this entry hehehehe.. will try to edit and post a snippet..

if you want a best quality, never use ISO higher than 200.

for this enviroment, no human (movement) in the photo, u can use manual mode, low ISO, Infinity, low shutter speed (try 2" ) and u need a tripod to stable ur camera. else, with low ISO & Shutter, your photo with blur with hand shake..

just my self learning on this camera..hope i not provide wrong info..
e 3 h y 0 r
low ISO will make the pic kinda dim
! Love Money
from my point of view ur pictures is considered good bcoz it is a PnS, there is a limit a PnS can do...
the white spot is actually the cloud that reflect the brightness of the city...
actually decrease the shutter speed to 2 or 3 seconds will help if u wan to decrease the ISO speed
e 3 h y 0 r
how to reduce shutter speed with this baby?
! Love Money
u use manual is it? press set and all the setting like manual/exposure compensation/WB/color/pics quality will appear at the left side of the lcd screen is it? scroll to exposure compensation and press the display button and u will notice the +/- exposure bracket will change to number... from there u can set the shutter speed up to 30 seconds max icon_rolleyes.gif
sinclairZX81
Longer exposure shots definitely need tripod.

I believe other had answer your question on the shutter speed. By lower the shutter speed, you will allow camera to capture more light, so your photo will have enough brightness. A tripod is a must when shutter slow more than a second.

Explain on the pixel:

Buying guide:
Buying Guide

In short, the quality is not affect by optical Zoom and m.p.

Optical zoom - allow you the zoom the object nearer, so you able to take object that far away from you in bigger object size. However, the further you zoom, the easy you get shake on the photo, so you need a tripod when using zooming.

M.p - 8MP allow you to print in A3 size paper. (i don't think you will need to print in such a large size ?) So, 8MP is enough. Some people brought 10MP camera but set the camera to save in 5MP to save stroge memory. Because, the higher MP, the size of each photo will need more storage area. Which means, you will need huge memory card to keep more high MP photo. Oh ya, besides print out..high MP photo also allow you to zoom in more in computer. However, you allow need to zoom in a lot on photo ?

Ask youself on above question, will help you to decide the camera that you need..

hope help.

Well 1 stupid questions ah what is PNS?? blush.gif

Well they demo to me already but i still dono whcich to get ahaha but most prob ill go for 860 as its cheaper lo..and the guy keep on pushing panasonic lumix to me say its good this tat say their lens 1 of the best.. hmm.gif dono true o not la..

BTW if the 860 RM1000 with 4GB memory wat u all think??good price??
sinclairZX81
PNS = Point and Shoot, simple for everybody to use. thumbup.gif

Well, the price I paid for mine was RM999 + 2GB + 1GB + screen protector + mini tripod + steel strap last PCFair. I think if you check at e-mart or e-warehouse at Pudu, maybe you can get a better deal. With the introduction of the 870IS recently, the price should have fallen more. icon_rolleyes.gif

Ic but problem is my location is in KK sabah lo..so sad..will be going kl for short trip this month end os plan to get lo a PNS smile.gif well what is the main differences for 860 vs 870?and how much is the price for 870 ah??
sinclairZX81
The most obvious differences is that the 870IS has more pixels (10MP) than the 860IS, which is not really needed IMO, and different button layout at the back.

I see most Canon new products would be priced about RM1,400 ++, then would settle down around RM1,299. Was the same for the 860IS I think.
paikut
OK icic but i always thought the more M.P and the more Optical Zoom is better smile.gif haha so just hope the price will fall more for the 860 drool.gif than ill be a happy buyer rclxms.gif

bro paikut, since u're in kk, y dun you cek this one camera shop in kk plaza. syarikat cpl. i bought mine there last year. authorised canon dealer too.

Is the 4GB memory is SDHC ? Class 4 or Class 6?

Quite good bargain..i believe.. i brought with RM1,500 last dec. That time SDHC still expensive, and 4 GB SDHC have class 4 only..
