2nd hand D80 body with low shutter count is easily available out there at roughly 2k. It's very very affordable!

I'm gonna stick with my D80 no matter what, prefer spending money on getting lenses rather than chasing newer technology camera body, unless someone kind enough to give me a D300 as a present on my upcoming birthday! drool.gif

When you know what you're shooting most , you will know that you doesn't need all the lens from Wide angle to Telephoto range with all 2.8 fix aperture.
Perhaps , I think I need a new body for the Low noise technology. wink.gif

This is from ShaShinKi, Nikon BM-7, you most probably can get it cheaper surveying at some camera shops.

When I was using the D80, I was using this only http://cgi.ebay.com/Pro-Glass-LCD-Screen-P...808011198r24343

I think it's much better. Cause with the BM-7, pictures were clear enough when looking at the LCD.

I have never saw any photos from D700-yet but D3, so I assume that the qualities from D300 will be alike as the D3 aswell ?

Last time when I just got my D80 , I was going to place my order for it but then the Huge bold word of GGS down there is a total rip-off so the only choice now is the Dicain brand which is hardly available in the market. blush.gif

Calvin : You're still in Malaysia now ? I would like to ask how much did you bought your Spyder calibrator ?

D700 IQ is close to D3, but D300 is nothing like D3.

Hehe, nothing wrong with GGS wording what... The nikon's are distinct enough already what...

I got mine in USA's newegg.com for around USD70 last time.

I am around but leaving 23rd august.

Common shops like YL Camera pudu and J-One camera in Amcorp mall have them in stock and also offer the lowest/average market price.

Don't get from those shops like Fotokem, Foto Shangrila or Bintang Maju type of shops, they will hike up the price and "chop" you.

Do you shoot at an angle?

When you recompose, do you change angle a lot?

Better select AF point close to eye and shoot.
KeonG118
i did try to use AF point that near the eye and shoot, not sharp as well.

Is it because of the wide open aperture? I just shot at F1.8 only.. if shot at F2.8 will be better focus?

I think the depth of field is too shallow already. You should bump it up.

Maybe you can increase ISO or use a flash.
KeonG118
so is that means that i can keep at F1.8, just increase ISO / FLash, then it will focus more accurately? sorry for asking too much of questions.. google around for sometimes but dint get any better answer.. sweat.gif

Well, are you having OOF issue or actually blur? Increasing ISO and flash will help reduce blurness only.

I think it's better to increase aperture.
KeonG118
it's not blur issue, it's front focusing issue while i set F1.8.. sweat.gif

but i think i need to test more before i can come to a conclusion..

btw calvin_gsc, thx for the help.. will come back and inform u the result.. thx..

I think that the problem lies in when you recompose your shot. Sometimes when you recompose, you might move a little thus causing the focused subject to be a little off focus. This is especially at f/1.8 as it has a very little depth of field. As suggested by Calvin, do try to adjust the focal point instead. Things could be better if you set your aperture to f/4 or f/5.6.

Yeah, oracle is right, f/1.8 DOF is too shallow for recompose shot. Try shooting at f/1.8 without recomposing and see if the problem still there. biggrin.gif

Here's a compilation of photos that i took with my D80.

Skin tone might a bit off cause one of the photos was underexposed and d-lighting was applied to the jpeg. I tried my best to edit them.

The Nikon D80 Replacement...

August 5--The D80 is now the granddad in Nikon's DSLR lineup. On a specification level, the D80 is missing a lot of check marks that the competition can now boast about in their marketing, and the fact that we're now almost exactly two years into the D80's life seems unusual given how fast the other Nikon consumer models iterated.

Well, that's about to end. The replacement for the D80 will be called the D90, as expected. Curiously, at a casual glance the only thing that most people will notice different from a D80 is the presence of a much bigger color LCD on the back. Indeed, most of the controls look pretty much the same (though the buttons are round now) and are in the same place on the D90 as they were on the D80. However, there are a few odds and ends that catch your notice on closer examination. On the back, for example, we now have Live View and Info buttons, and the OK button is in the middle of the direction pad. On the front there's a microphone grill next to the infrared receiver. On the side, the labels on the rubber doors reveal HDMI and GPS connectors in addition to the expected ones.

So what is a D90? Well, a 12mp, ~4.5 fps DSLR, basically. On paper those seem like modest boosts from the D80. In practice, they are a distinct notch forward in performance. The big news, however, is that Live View now has a twist that other DSLRs can't currently claim: it can record video (thus the microphone grill).

We also get a new lens for kitting with the D90: the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR. Modest in size (67mm filter size), this seems like a nice addition to the lineup and well targeted to the D80/D90 type of user. Essentially, this is a 28-150mm equivalent. Not truly superzoom, but a good compromise between size and reach. This new lens also plugs the VR hole Nikon had in the DX lens lineup (essentially no VR in the kit lenses if you wanted more than 55 but less than 200 at the long end).

Don't ask when or how much. To my knowledge, Nikon hasn't scheduled a press conference for product introduction yet, though they have a first quarter financial results meeting later this week. Since high-quality photos of production models appear to be circulating on the Internet, I'd guess that soon is the answer to the first question, and I wouldn't expect any big surprises (up or down from the original D80 list price) in cost.
Joseph Hahn
Lol video recording. doh.gif I expected them to add VR on the current 18-135 instead of coming out with a new 18-105VR. So now what's left is a total revamp for the D40. hmm.gif
greggs
i think its only a rumour though, not confirmed yet.. haha
calvin_gsc
Holy crap... Video recording on a DSLR? Thought it sounds wrong... But it's convenient!

But i suspect battery life will be an issue. Cause using live view eats quite a bit of battery even on my D300. So, if constant video... it wont be good.
aladdin
Just want to ask, is now the right time to get D80 (im pretty sure a lot ppl will tell me buying camera is just like IT stuff, never able to follow). But since i have limited budget, maybe just wait D90 released, and get a lower price for D80?

If you can wait... Go ahead.

Price might drop by a bit.

But currently the D80 is pretty lowly priced already.
aladdin
i know the price just drop recently. Im targeting at 18-200mm VR lens, so it will cost me a boom. Can save then save a bit loh...
Joseph Hahn
D80 is already pretty darn cheap now hehe. Dunno if it will drop some more. Better get one while stocks last! biggrin.gif

I just bought a Nikon D80 sometimes around last month and everything is working fine. I have capture almost 2000+ photos and everything works great. The battery can last of almost 900+ captures per charge (With combination of both built in flash usage and non). I'm quiet satisfy with it. I move on to Nikon SB-600 as I need more flash power to expand more photography possibility. This is what I experience.

To clarify, I have not once before experience this, before I got the flash. When ever I take photos with SB-600 together with it, the battery indicator will show up "low battery warning", either it is 2-3 photos per session, else it will last for around 20-30 photos then only it will show up the warning. This have been very annoying for me, as while sometimes you need to do continuos shot and you are unable to capture it. I have to switch in on and off then the battery status will be normal and I can continue to capture pictures.

I have checked with my Nikon D80 firmware and it is the latest version. I don't think I have don't anything wrong with my settings. What could be possible the reason? I have email Nikon, but they wanted me to send in the camera to let them have a check-up, duration of the progress, unknown. I just can't afford to leave it there. What can I do?
