Hi all,
Just wanna get some opinions from you guyz...
I will be going for a wedding shooting, for the morning 'chut mun' and dinner ceremony next month (volunteer, not charging anything. Already got one official photographer there.) . So mostly will be indoor shoots. Currently my gears are d80 kit lens only. And I found it quite difficult to shoot as most of the photos are blurred due to long exposure (flash did not fired). And if i use the build in flash, the background will be dark and the subject will be too bright, and of course shadows.
So, any accessories that can improve the condition i mentioned above? My initial planning was to get a external flash like SB-600 and SB-800 for bounce flash and diffused flash. But beside this, any other way for me to make a better shot under low light condition?
Thanks.

You'll need an external flash. Both SB600 and SB800 are good choices and alternatively you could go for third party flash guns like Nissin or Sunpak if you have a tight budget. Anyway i think that flash guns are good investment. My advice is try to play around with the flash before the wedding photoshoot so that you won't fumbles on the day.
Good luck

For your "blurred" shots, it's most likely motion blur or handshake blur.
In this case, your shutter speed isn't high enough to counter these effects. If it's too dark to have a sufficiently fast shutter speed, try bumping up your ISO. If the excessive noise bothers you, then you either have to get a external flash or a "fast" lens... i.e 17-55mm f2.8 Nikkor, or Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 or 50mm f1.4... etc so that it allows you a somewhat faster shutter speed without having to bump up the ISO.

Hi darthbaboon
Thanks for the reply. I already bump up my ISO to 1000 already. Yet still blurred. I might not because of my hands shaky, but it is because the subject is moving (I like paparazo shots.

).
Yea, I was thinking of 17-50mm f2.8 tammy also, but it is way out of my budget. Maybe should be my next purchase?

ISO 1000 is one thing... but check your EXIF for your shutter speed. Also, what mode are you shooting at? For mobile subjects, anything lower than 1/100 is slow leh. If you catch them during a pause you might be lucky @ slower... otherwise it's a risky thing cause you can't technically ask the wedding couple to go-stan and re-walk the isle, or "You may kiss the bride.... AGAIN".

Otherwise for ultimate effect, try panning shots for the wedding couple la.
Fast Lens + Flash = WIN

Most of the shutter speed without flash fired are 1/4, 1/5 secs. Some manage to get it clear, but some of it are blurred due to moving subjects.
Mostly I use aperture priority as I need to be fast. If use manual, then chia lat.. Have to control the shutter speed also.
Do you have any idea how much does the tammy 17-50mm f2.8 cost?
I think I will get the flash first, budget constrain. hehe
I dun realli know how to do panning shots yet. Any reference for me? Will be going for the drifting shooting this weekend. So will realli need panning skills.

Yeap, surely will go for flash first now.
But there is 2 model in my list. SB-800 and SB-600.
Which one shall I go for? Of course SB-800 is better but does the advantage of SB-800 useful for my everyday usage?
2nd question,
How about VR lens? Does VR helps alot in low light condition?
Thanks.

VR allows you several stops lower without the shot being affected by handshake blur... but it doesn't work for motion blur.
And 1/4, 1/5 is WAYYYYYYYYY too low. Totally No-No for anything that has the remote possibility of moving... even a sleeping child would've moved between that time. I'd only use that speed for roadkill... definitely not a wedding shoot.
1/4 & 1/5 possiblity of handshake blur is also very high.

Yeap, I really know that it is too low. But I dun want to use the internal flash coz I wont look nice on the subject and the background will be dark.
Thats why sometimes I shoot I have to hold my breath for a while to get the shot, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't
Moreover, I was shooting at those cafe's yesterday. You know lar, those cafe mostly got green, blue, yellow etc etc lights.
Dah lah noob at white balance, summore gimme that type of environment. Du lan, go set at automatic white balance.

@Vortrack: welcome to the club!
@sunny: sb-800 more powerful than sb-600.
u can see the comparison here.
one thing to note is the power, zoom range and recycle time.
well, i got a sb-900 =p. u only need 4 batteries in a sb-900 instead of 5 batteries (the 5th battery is located outside the body, which is ugly!) in a sb-800 for maximum recycling speed.

Hi,
I hope i posted this in right place.
I need some advise as I am planning to get new DSLR.
I read quite a numerous articles and most of the author recommended Nikon D80 is best choice for 10mp SDLS.
So far, on camera i have 80% confirmed on getting Nikon D80 body. For the lens, I am quite not sure which lens is better for me.
Here is what I have come up, feel free to advise.
I like to take macro picture as well portrait and here is my started lens:
Nikon 18mm - 70mm ED lens and I plan to get Nikon 100mm Macro lens due to price I might change to Tamron 90mm Macro lens.
BTW, any idea which shop is better in Penang Island and any idea on latest price on above Camera n Lenses?
PS: Any 2nd lens shop in Penang?

Nikon 55-200mm , you wont regret this, better the the other 2 you mentioned.
I have used the Nikon 70-300G lens and its soft, and i wont go for Tamron quality on this.
If you still want a longer zoom, then the Sigma 70-300 lens has gotten good revies.
But still the Nikon 55-200mm is better, dont waste your money on the others.

Since the D80 already has a focusing motor, would it be ok use it with the new tamron 17-50 with built in motor? any problems?

There is nothing wrong with using a lens with builtin motor with a camera which has builtin focussing motor.
Just like any Nikon camera can use Nikon's AF-S line of lenses. AF-S in nikon lenses means the lens has builtin motor.
Nikon lenses with builtin motor focuses faster.
For the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 it seems that the model with builtin motor somehow focuses slower vs the old lens. Which is why many people still look for the older model.
I am using the older one with my D300.

Added on November 14, 2008, 8:10 pmOr should i go for D80 body + AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED ? i think pricing should be about the same
whats the different between AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED and AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED ?
Anyone care to give me some advise on which is better?
If you plan to have a good all round lens , go for 18-135 as this lens cover you from Wide angle to Mid range telephoto.
I personally doesn't like telephoto most of the time , the picture will not be tack sharp unless have the moolah for 70-200mm f2.8.
Basically , go for 18-135 or the D90 kit lens as it comes with VR features.
