Gorgan
hi all sifu's~ there is a question i wanna ask regarding the aperture, and the lens focus length. I used my teacher's d80 with 18 - 200 mm VR lens. The problem is, when I change the mode to Manual and use the lens at 200mm, my widest aperture can only be manually set to f/5(something) with my shutter speed at 200... Is this normal, can I use 200mm and have f/3 or 4 ? I don't have a dslr camera but I am learning and saving to buy one~ thanks~ correct me if I am wrong on the whole aperture and lens focus thing~ If I am not mistaken, if I have bigger shutter speed, I will have to have wider aperture so that my photo won't look too dark, is it?

Thanks~~

That's due to the lens itself... the 18-200mm is a f3.5 - 5.6 lens - variable aperture.

Meaning at 18mm, your max aperture is f3.5. While at max zoom 200mm, your max aperture will be f5.6.

There's nothing you can do to reduce that... it's the way the lens is.

What you have to do is compensate and make your picture more exposed by either i) Reducing your shutter speed or ii) Bumping up your ISO.

If you buy a fixed aperture lens for example the 70-200 f2.8, the aperture will remain constant throughout the zoom range... however, fixed aperture lenses are EXPENSIVE!

Hope that helps, and enjoy the hobby! smile.gif

Hey Gorgan, that is normal because the lens is rated at f/3.5-5.6. This means at 18mm, the widest it will go is f/3.5 and at 200mm widest is f/5.6. It is a lens limitation.

The only way you can set the aperture to stay at its widest aperture is if you have a constant aperture lens. This is commonly found on fixed focal length lenses and also premium lenses for various brands. You can tell by looking at the lens specs/names.

Like the 18-200mm VR, the lens name is AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED, The underlined parts tells you it is not a constant aperture lens.

Another example would be one of Nikon's premium lenses, the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S. The f/2.8 means even if zoom till 55mm, the lens will able to have an aperture setting of f/2.8.

So, to sum it up, if you see on any lens, and you can see a range of aperture written on it,. Most likely that lens is not fixed aperture and it is a variable aperture lens. Which also means the widest aperture you can use is dependent on focal length of the lens.
Gorgan
ahh~~ now* I see!! No wonder~ hehe thanks darthbaboon and calvin_gsc for replying~~ Well, another question, if I get a fixed aperture lens, and lets say its f/2.8, can I adjust the value to a more bigger f/value? like f/10? Since its a FIXED lens, I wonder if it can be changed~

Well, some people call it fixed aperture, I prefer to call it constant aperture.

Yeah, these lenses can be adjusted to have smaller apertures (higher f/numbers)

Yes you can adjust it to whatever number you like... even f22... etc. The limit is just how large it can go... which for f2.8 lenses, is f2.8. If you buy an f1.4 lens, then the max aperture is f1.4.

Edit : Lol..... double similar replies again. I'll hide somewhere now. tongue.gif

I was getting tired of changing too many lenses for different shots. Oh,BTW, just
sold my wilde angle yesterday, and the guy was impressed with the Mint Quality.

Mainly my Golf has not given me much chance to use the camera much,so really
dont want to spend too much money on equipment .

So now have to hunt for a Used D80 and a 18-105mm VR1 lens.
I know the one lens solution is not the solution, but what to do lah...hehe.. tongue.gif

So any Pros here want sell their D80 with lens and Move to D90...let me know.
The camera and lens must be in Mint Condition, with low SC and a reasonable price.! smile.gif
Just PM me and and let me know.
My h/p: ZeroOneNine-3322435

Hi Darth,
I see you have sold your lens. You are the person i should be talking to.
What do you think of the Nikon 18-105mm Vr lens, is there another lens
that is better within this price Range.

Thanks

Hey mate... but I am "NOT" the correct person to be talking to... tongue.gif Simply because I sold my lens in Pristine Brand New Untouched Condition... meaning I never laid a single fingerprint on it, and did not open the lens to test at all.

So I have no way of giving any form of opinion.

What I've heard from the person who bought my lens (was previously using the 18-55 kitty) is that it's a great lens. Internet reviews and other user opinions have rated the lens quite well.

For the 1k price tag... I doubt there's another Nikkor zoom kit lens in this price range that outperforms this one (I say this with reservations cause some might claim that the 18-70mm is the best kit lens ever made...etc).

For a little bit more, you could look at the third party lenses @ fixed aperture... but fixed aperture lenses will never have this kinda range flexibility.

Haha....good one.
Well, i would like to,but since i got rid of all my camera equipment, including
the wide angle, bag, etc, i wanted to get a Lumix3.
But since i might be going overseas,i feel the DSLR has more
to offer.
Lets see if i can get a Good Used D80 with low SC with Warranty, i might
just grab it and get either the 16-85mm VR2 or the 18-105mm Vr lens.

Maybe come back, sell it and later wait for the D90 price to drop and grab that!.

Not really in a Hurry now as i have 3 more weeks, before i leave!.

So how do you find the D80.
Read the review at DPreview on the D90,and they have not given that camera a
favorable review!.... rclxub.gif

Any camera is suitable to take pictures of moving objects... including the D80.

If your shutter speed is fast enough, you can freeze the object in movement.

Or you can try a panning shot.  tongue.gif

Actually my reference was for those who thought an upgrade to a D90 from
D80 would set them worlds apart.
It might for some, but if you are short of cash, your D80 is good enough.
But who am i to complain !.. smile.gif ... i am still getting my D80.... whistling.gif

Obviously for the D90 the Pros are much, much greater then the Cons and its gotten a Highly Recommended
rating .

So Darth, do you own both of these, and if you do, which gives you the most satisfaction.

I did not own a D80 before, but I've played with D300 and upgraded from a D40X... which is definitely a bigger jump than the D80 => D90.

Everyone has his/her own reasons to upgrade, and since it's their own money... it's theirs to use as they please.

"Satisfaction" is subjective too. I'm definitely satisfied with the D90, since I had certain camera specifications and performances that I had aimed for in wanting to upgrade, and the D90 met them all with some bonuses here and there.

If your needs are already met with the D80, then I'm sure you'd be satisfied as well with it.

Does getting the D90 suddenly make my photos leap out of the page? Naw... they're still about the same as before when I had the D40X. The difference now is I can take the same photos with less hassle, thus giving me the flexibility of using that "additional effort" I had to put in earlier to possibly figure out how to improve on my shots now, or R&R more between shots.

Yes I am currently shooting with the 50mm f1.8 and learning much about framing the photo carefully rather than zooming to frame.

Next lens? I'm aiming for the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 as my primary walkabout.

70-200 is too heavy for a walkabout, and unnecessary for my photographic subjects & interests. I decided on 24-70 after doing much reading, research, and actual usage of both the 28-70mm and the 24-70mm lenses. smile.gif

Flash kaw kaw but SB-900 got some temperature sensor thingy that will stop the sb-900 from flashing and let it cool down before you can flash again.

But of course, SB-900 better cause can burst flash at max flash output (1/1).
