hmmm, since donald asked, im asking too. lol. im not much of a guitar player but for the past month, ive been looking around for a good acoustic guitar to settle down with. lol~ i went to bentley, tried out taylor's 112e if im not mistaken, but i dont dare to try the expensive one in the room. also have the chance to try takamine. visited guitar collection, tried some martin, seagull, and some other stuff. i also went to the guitar store and tried maton, and finally went to beatspot to try out some yamaha. and no buying yet. pity them. heres the question, im still wondering why is it that yamaha's cpx900 is the easiest to play with. anyone can explain this?
*

If you would kindly state your budget.

I too have tried many acoustic guitars, I'm not much of an acoustic player, but my friend is, so as an excuse to window shop I have tried a number of acoustic.

You prefer dreadnoughts or smaller bodies like Grand Auditoriums/ Concerts or huge Jumbos?

If your budget is bout 4000 I'd recommend Breedlove's Atlas series, available in SMX
Solid Spruce top, Solid Indian Rosewood back, laminated rosewood sides

If it's about 2500 I'd suggest a Martin 000X1, available in various places, such as Tonezone studios
Solid Spruce top, laminated mahogany back/sides

The Breedlove Atlas has a relatively bright sound, and very very rich harmonic tone.

The Martin 000X1 is darker, though with the OM body, it's warm but has nice smooth highs. Less complex sounding than the Breedlove though, but that's a different guitar altogether.

whoa. thanx for the reply mate. somehow my post got less replies. ahha. hmm, well, i got a friend whos going to the us in november. so thinking of trying the stuff here, and buy there. thinking of something around 700usd. lol~ pity local music shop. hmmm i prefer it to be dreadnoughts i think. with a cutaway. but shape like compass is fine too. im yet to try breedlove. went to smx on a sunday/saturday forgot which day. i didnt know they only opens during weekdays. lol~

owh, forgot to add that i also want electronics with the guitar. and bump to the question on playability of the compass. anyone can answer that? and i know solid top is important, but for laminated back/sides, how does that affect the guitar? someone told me not to go with taylor 100 n 200 series as its using laminated back/side. can anyone explain this too?
echobrainproject
gotta agree with the breedlove suggestion. ive tried it and love it. i just cant afford it now
Everdying
smx closed on weekends? i guess thats cos they have no one left to look after it on weekends.
once they find someone then i guess they'll be open on saturdays again.
sundays of cos closed.
echobrainproject
i thought they got some girl in to replace khairul?

Added on July 7, 2008, 11:49 pmokay maybe girl sounds too young, but theres a lady now working there.
Everdying
lady? the plump one? or got new one?
echobrainproject
cant remember if she's plump or not. im guessing she's new as i only saw her there after khairul left. and when i ask things she had to refer back to the price list at the counter and stuff.

Laminated doesn't always immediately mean they're bad, I've played with some laminated guitars i think it was a 104CE i think, laminated mahogany back/sides, which sounded really really good.
Laminated back/sides tend to contain alot of glue since they're laminated, thus the glue absorbs some of the vibrations from the string, causing difference in tone (ie duller) and reducing some sustain. But if the guitar sounds good to your ears, plays good in your hands, does it really matter what others think ?

Of course there's bragging rights lah, but then again, you can always brag my cheaper guitar sounds better than yours xD of course if that is the case lah =p

My friend has this SX dreadnought, solid spruce top and laminated mahogany back/sides sounded alot better than many dreadnought guitars under 2k, namely some epiphone acoustics and art&lutherie, seagull, and quite a few others. And that guitar cost 450 MYR only =/

aik SMX closed on weekends d ar?

Everdying, I've seen the AXL guitars in the Guitar Store Cheras a few months back, they have quite a number of models, including the Jacknife (with a very scarred scrathplate), selling at sligtly below RM900 if not mistaken. I really wants to get my hands on one of them since thay look knda cool and very cheap also.

Currently I'm in Brisbane and couldn't find any good deals at all sad.gif
sean392
Okay guys, my guitar has an active midsweep preamp (Jackson JE-1550), and I intend to remove it to convert the guitar to a fully passive setup, any idea who can I find for the job? Or even better hardwire a true bypass so it doesn't have to rely on batteries.

well, to be honest, its really hard for me to tell which guitar sounds good or bad. my ears are not that good. so, i always end up like a fool when testing stuff. haha. currently, im using this cort guitar. i guess its not a bad one, but still thinking of getting a better one to settle down with. anyway, cpx 900 is priced at RM3030 that day, its mit. is that a good buy or overpriced? it really is comfortable playing with it compared with my current cort. what do you guys think?
sean392
It's 2 very different guitars there. But keep your Cort, I tried that CPX900 b4, not very impressed =/
where did you get that cort tho, been wanting to try some corts =p

trix, i guess it's still cheaper buying the guitar there and hand-carry. no local tax (10% on the declared value and the stupid custom officers ALWAYS include the shipment costs in calculating the tax) & no shipment charges. expect mine to include all that blush.gif

anyway, i wanna chip in on the issue of Duckie too. how "powerful" a 13 year old can be, forced us (and the drummers) to open new threads just because of him. and he dared to challenge us (especially the Mods - welcome EBP) on the banning. i dunno what's his intention but i'm getting soooooo freaking annoyed! this "budak hingusan" needs some serious lessons in life!

duckie, with this kind of attitude, i dunno what u've been trying to prove coz u r not proving anything but just making urself looks silly & pathetic. and the worst part is, u r hurting the feelings of many & this is sinful (whatever ur religion is). when ppl start cursing u, u think God will like u? u think u'll live a blissful & peaceful life? think about it. respect others & i'm sure u'll get the same in return. u have a long way to go & it's never to late for u to realize & REPENT. i'm not preaching but just hope that u can be a human being & treat other human beings accordingly. i've been living in this world more than 2 & half of your age, been there done that! i'm sure ppl will appreciate if u ask for their forgiveness & prove that u've changed & grown-up.

i know u have my HP no, just call me anytime (like u used to) if u wanna say anything at all.
echobrainproject
okay i know duckie did cause alot of issues here.

but lets move on with our guitar talk and feed our GAS shall we?

i just got my guitar back yesterday as it needed some minor fixing. practice is tonight and ive always been gigging with 1 electric guitar with no backup.
what makes a good back up guitar? any opinion/suggestion guys?
nothing wrong with my les paul. i think its one of the most durable guitars and its setup doesnt run fast (unlike guitars with thin necks, floyd rose, etc).
Everdying
im sure u know by now thin necks dont necessarily make u play faster tongue.gif

if i was u, first thing is to send it to tham again and ask him check ur frets.
if its levelled properly, u can set the action extremely low...cos i have done it on my epi LP before.

and of cos a better backup would be something thats similar.
no use adjusting in the middle to a different scale length body watever etc.
echobrainproject
oops. that came up wrong. what i meant was that a les paul is very stable, and its settings doesnt go off. unlike thin neck guitars with crazy weather it tends to bend easier, FR if your string breaks during a set theres no way you can continue finishing the song.

my les paul is setup really low and i got it refret recently.

so ure suggesting another les paul? hmmm...
WHY NOT? smile.gif
Everdying
well, anything with a 24.75" scale would be good.
like a SG perhaps? tongue.gif

thats my guitar in kuching, so if i just have to fly back and have too many luggages (or taking air asia, and have to bring bck my acoustic with me), then i thats my run to guitar. its old, and the tunings run very fast.
