Hey fellow guitarists,
I'm thinking of changing string gauge
so I'm curious what gauge and what brand of strings are you guys using?
Oh yeah, does playing style affects wat string gauge to get?
I'm into blues lately and love bends n vibratos
Thnx

What guitar are you using and what gauge are you currently on?
But changing strings won't affect as much as you might think, unless you find bends and hammer ons lacking,...

i'm using ernie ball's regular slinky, 0.10s.
to me 0.09s strings doesn't feel as good as 0.10s to me while bending and vibrato.

I'm not sure what string gauge I'm using
guitar is yamaha pac, strat style
I think it's the same gauge as it was from the store
yeah I'm thinking of 10s too
anyone tried d'addario?

Go here:
http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/142/14222045/vids_1.htmlZakk and Hayley Williams videos are up on their upcoming appearance in Guitar Hero.....
god, Zakk looks so out of place!!!
Oh, and 320cbr, I would suggest D'addario XL Nickle Wound Strings, gauge .10 - .46. Costs around RM20 (or cheaper) a pack. I used to use D'addarios for my RR3, but switching to Dunlop.... specifically the Zakk Wylde set, because a) they sound heavier to me and b) Because I'm a Zakk Wylde whore
The Medium gauge is 10, 13, 17, 26, 36, 46 which I will install in my RR3 and upcoming Razorback, while I use the heavier 10, 13, 17, 36, 52, 60 gauge for my Les Pauls.

How different would 10-60's be compared to 10-52's?I've thought of changing to 10-60's but I bend and vibrato a lot so I'm kinda reluctant to switch.Bad experience from 11's,haha.

u will definitely need to reset the guitar.
60 is huge, 52 is still somewhat ok.
and if u use a floyd, forget it.

love them
but kinda hard to do bendings

I admire the tone SRV makes with 13s gauge strings
that inspired me to go heavier gauges
ofcourse, I don't have strong fingers to play 13s... ^^"

Oct 2 2008, 02:40 PM
Alot of beginner's mistakes are using too thin strings, then switching up to thicker strings and find it instantly hard to bend. I started with thick strings and going to thin strings are too easy and I usually over shoot my bends

.9s are great for shredding though... I have to admit.

for floyd rose guitar, do we need to get it setup when we change the gauge from 0.09s to 0.10s?
if yes, then i guess i will send my ibby to ng again, with the tremol-no setup i hope. haha.

Haha maybe that's a good way to build strenth?
lets say, change to 11s then switch back to 9s

Speaking of which, I used to use .49-.11 on my lp before going to .42-.09
.11s sounds a wee bit thicker, plays real nice for bluesy stuff like gary moore
since i used a guitar with a floating bridge, i have been using .42-.09s since
initially it was quite hard to control the bends but it's all good now
tone wise its only very slightly thinner and brighter, but you can go on playing for hours
11s tire me out of after about 2 hours or so (with alot of bends and vibratos)
at one point my fixed bridge guitar was on .49-.11 and my floating bridge .42-.09
changing between gauges was pain in the *** so....
i'd suggest you choose a gauge and stay there.
.10s is actually a good balance of tone and playability i guess
p/s .56 - .13 on acoustics are awesome xD

My feeling is that it's best for starters to start with a lower gauge strings, then gradually increase the gauge when you feel like it. I think a thicker strings definitely increases tone and feel, but don't force yourself on thicker strings. If Iommi can play all those eeevvill riffs on .08s, why not you?

Generally my rule for electrics is that I use .10 and .11 on 24.75 scale guitars, while .9 or .10 on 25.5 scale guitars, also depends on the tuning.

Oct 2 2008, 05:12 PM
I started off with 10-52s, never looked back since. Great thick lower strings for those chugging riffs, and thin higher strings for soloing. I cant use 9s, they just feel so weak and lifeless.

Pfffttt/.... .60 FTW!!!!
You can really feel the diff from .42 to .60 when you're doing drop D tuning stuff.
One finger barr chords sounds freakin' heavy.... even more so because it's a les paul.....
