i just recently registered a phone line and streamyx, combo package. and its still in the process of waiting for them to install the phone line to my house. i told the women from TMnet that i would like to rent the modem instead of buying one, cos i'm to lazy to hassle around buying modem and installing it myself, and so she told me a contractor will deal it for me...

now the thing is, lots of my friend who used to rent the modem hv tons of problem, modem heating up, unable to connect etc etc. so they advice me to buy a modem instead. is it possible for me to use the rental modem for maybe lets say about a month and see how it goes, and when i got sick of it, can i just cancel it and tell TMnet that i dont want to use the modem? or is it a one year contract that i am force to use their modem?

or maybe my other option is just hassle, buy my self a modem, go to tmnet and cancel the rental package before they install the modem themself for me? what are the process do i hv to go through if i want to cancel the rental package even before my phone line is fixed, is their going to be any complication to my application for the phone line later on?

can anyone help me wit this? or maybe hopefully there is a TMnet official that can help me on this, that would be superb!

thank guys! sweat.gif

Sharing my experience (normal package) 2003-2005
renting or buying modem ?

renting RM99 (1 year contract, can't downgrade to RM66/88)
assume yr modem fault without reasons(*act of god) brows.gif , TM will replace yr modem within 2-3 days at yr premises.
personally i never encounter over-heat modem. but you have the right to ask for exchange modem 2 other brand, if u suspect the modem fault.
paid extra more & get premium service & trouble free.

buying RM88
if you to RMA yr modem, it might take 1-6week. and some shop charge RMxx for "processing & transportation" & just said modem faulty for unknown reason.
drive all the way to shop send/collect < "time, money & trouble"
no internet connection, either wait 4 modem back from RMA or buy new modem $$$ again, to get connect 2 internet

peace of advice, buying modem from contractor/agent
be careful with some contractor u deal with, they might get u cheapest modem = rent modem < same fate ???
if you about to RMA the modem, yr contractor/agent is nowhere to be found. my recommend get the modem yrself. (Sorry i got nothing against u all, so far 1 of my client encounter this)
if you insist buy from them, ask for official receipt from shop. TM won't be responsibility what u deal contractor/agent.

talk about repercussions from the fuel hike. i got a first hand experience of it yesterday.

those staying in kota kemuning..... beware!

parked my car at the covered car park building nearest to mcdonalds yesterday n went for lunch around 1.30pm. left for only about 15mins. when i came back it was gone... my ride..... satria gti cry.gif

when i went to lodge a police report at sec 15, i met one malay couple who also lost their toyota wish. i overheard them mentioning gti..... when i asked them, they described my car and reg no. cry.gif they identified the robbers as 2 indians. they stole my car n used it to hit the couple's wish on kesas highway to rob them of their vehicle also. talk about daring...

whats gone is gone.... those who r staying in kota kemuning area pls be careful when u park your car around the town centre. also i would suggest to be very careful if you send your car for washing around the shophouses here as they might duplicate your keys. i used to send my car for washing next to the nts food court.

as for the 'bastards' who stole my car... may they rot in hell forever n ever.... mad.gif

I thought it comes with Free Modem as I am using streamyx combo as well. The installation is basically hassle free. Well , it depends on you. certainly the modem is cheap and it might cause some problem if you run it as a router. I would just say take the rental modem and use it. Plus you're covered if the modem is struck by lighting or anything else whereas if you are using your own modem , you're dead (well there is RMA). But usually TM folks come to your house for 1 to 1 exchange which is worth it

thanks for the advice guys, biggrin.gif think i'll just stick with rental. can u rent modem/router 2-in-1 from the contractor, or they only rent out modem to you?

hey prasys what do u mean when u said "it might cause some problem if you run it as a router" u mean the rental modem from TMnet can cause problems when running it as a router?...sorry ah super noob bout all this stuff blink.gif

the ADSL modem is supply by the TMnet(you are renting from them). if you using winxp dial-up connection aka (manual connection), by right 24/7 should not be a issue.
most of the ADSL modem can function as router aka(2-in-1), so you can buy a 5-8port switch and start internet sharing with network PC. but remember TMnet provide wide variety brand modem(Aztech-2-Zyxel).
some brand handle good load, while other failed miserable(depend on luck)

good luck tongue.gif

Well said Ketamine. That is the summary. Basically , if you're using for a PC. It shouldn't be a problem at all. It suffers badly when you turn on the routing function to share the connection !

cool, very informative hehe laugh.gif...i'm not gonna over load the modem though. just my pc and my ps3..so is it advisable to just use the modem as router OR to be on the save side get myself a router for better bandwidth flow to the ps3?
K for Ketamine
depend on modem itself, you can always buy a proper router later or never. just hang on with free/rental modem.

It comes with a modem. Don't worry , telekom people will come to you and will do the installation for you. all you have to do is just sit back and relax. of course , you'll have to pay RM 88 for the installation fees
