about that article, you shouldn't take a big breath of air for these vocals. use small amounts of air but take in frequently

personally, i have 2 ways of growling. 1 is the brutally deep one which sounds good but tires me, the other being the overtoned one, something like randy's growl from lamb of god. i'm still working on the latter though, but i feel its harder to get than the former.

I think the answer to the Hetfield question is lots and lots of booze. No pills/ shortcuts.... heh heh oh and add a "yeargh" at the end of every word.

VEry simple all you need to do is to perform one ritualistic dance during a full moon night making sure your have rubbed your body with the blood of one virgin chicken , This must be done while keeping one finger in your bum and the other is your ear , If you have appeased the devil he will come to possess you and your voice will automatically change to the monstrous tone that you wish , hope this helped .

If that's the case, no more chance of being a vocalist in a death metal band? Maybe I can do high pitch screams...something like Lamb of god

doesnt matter what kind of voice you have, you will still be able to do it.
best example would be angela gossow from arch enemy. she's a hot chick but when she opens her mouth..
also, check out walls of jericho for a different technique

But then came along Nathan Explosion and brutalized everyone.

the original cookie monster vox from orbituary is the best la.
orbituary's albums had no real words, just lots of guttural vox...thats one way out from having to write lyrics

Or you could go the opposite route and do a Claudio Sanchez (google: Coheed&Cambria). Songs are epic and solid, but dude sings so high, sounds like a girl. The guys can really rock out though - check out the riffage/soloing on "Welcome Home" (the original cut, not the radio single/video).
One of my friends here were at a gig where Coheed & Cambria were opening and they were outside smoking. When they heard Coheed play, they were like "Damn, that chick sounds hot", and rushed in to see a dude with a huuuuge afro rocking out.

LOL I wanna sing death metal. Don't wanna try anything funny like that.
Been trying out the tips from youtube and all....How do I actually control my diagphram? It's like trying to control my heart beat
Or should I start with something milder like Hetfield of Metallica first before going into Death Metal Vocals?

if im nt mistaken, its sumin 2 do wit sucking ur stomch in and takin in lotsa air thru d mouth.whn u suck ur stomach in ur diagphram goes up as well.dats hw u control it.
as for hetfield's voice, his voice is naturally deep n hoarse.listen 2 nothin else matters, he doesn have 2 force himself.
but age is cathching up n he sounds like sh*t in his concerts

lol I'm already giving up with all these trainings. The freaking problem is I can't control my diagphram. Yeah, it's that hard for me that it's like controlling my heart beat.
Now, looks like I can only do thrash metal vocals

cause that doesn't involve the diagphram.

I downloaded 'The Zen of Screaming' some time ago. It was just ok. Throughout the whole dvd, she never even once tells you how to scream. Its more of just tips on breathing and enunciation while screaming and all.
I started coying Alexi Laiho's vocal style (yes, i know he's not death metal), seems to be the only one i can do properly. The rest are quite hard to master. Used to be able to do Matt Heafy's growl/scream, now i don't know why i cant do it without coughing anymore. Maybe its the side-effect of smoking a pack a day.
SweetTooth
Jul 20 2008, 05:17 AM
i smoke more than a pack a day and i still do fine

but its true, the zen of screaming is disappointing. not once did she actually teach you how to do it, she just assumes you know how to scream already and teach you how to not screw up your vocal cords

Hey I heard smoking helps to actually make your throat's surface coarser. Will that help?
fatboythin
Jul 20 2008, 12:22 PM
I guess it did help me a bit. It kinda brings up the phlegm or something, so its more coarser. I don't know whether thats just for me though. You should consult other smokers too.

ok, i'll give some comment. i do listen to some death metal and i find those which are well produced are quite nice to listen.
your sample has a few things to consider:
1. naturally, anything screaming goes into phone will result death metal.
2. with just vocal it'll be like some insane guy screaming instead of sounding like a death metal.
so...get a decent mic and soundcard to record a higher quality sample, and laydown guitars/drums/bass thing.
music is like a picture, no point seeing just single element on the picture, you must see the picture as a whole.

yea...I do agree with you. So before I get a mic or something (which is quite unlikely, only after I get my 70's LP

) I'll keep practising. Each time I do this, my stomach feels tired, like internally. Don't know how to describe it though

there are 2 ways that i use, one by lowering my larynx(much more tiring but produces a deeper but somewhat weaker growl) and by raising the larynx which i am practicing now. raising it does less damage to your vocal cords according to mel cross, but its harder to get a deep growl with it. its better for metalcore-ish screams but im still working on it

wow...I can't control my larynx. You meant Larynx by the upper portion of your throat?
