yes you need to install the driver. normally the driver can find in the motherboard CD

Tell him the opposite.
Tell him that windows 98 doesn't support USB.

This way, you'll have a better chance to get a new computer.

Just my 2cents though. laugh.gif

mmm... nice suggestion there... there's an universal USB driver for all USB devices out there but I don't know if it support USB card...
NaMyzarC
make sure your windows version is win98 SE
ayob99
When you go out and purchase that USB card, check whether the manufacturer includes the drivers for Windows 98 (usually printed on the box). If it does then you would not have to use the universal drivers which sometimes MAY not work.

ya tats rite make sure its support 98..
p0s31d0n
of course can but you must install the driver first then plug-in the usb card..the rest win98 will auto detect
REDFlELD
Yes, you can. I have a Pentium II that was recently installed with an optical mouse using a USB cart(PCI I think). So I don't think it'll have any problems with USB HDD.

I presume that BlindBikerz was talking about getting USB flash drives to work under windows 98, and it is a pain since most USB flash drives don't come with 9X drivers these days. Personally I would just chuck one of these modern linux distro's into the old PC, since it sounds like its nothing more than a office PC, but anyway:

There is a generic USB mass storage for Windows 98.

Disclaimer: while it works for me, it might not work for everyone, and not all USB storage devices are supported. And please, please, read the instructions, that say "remove all USB drivers" before you proceed.
