yes true...and it doesn't overwrite...you can try to install and have a look at your add remove program list. Well at least in XP, i can say that is the case.

It's technically supposed to be backwards compatible, but bugfixes and patches make that a little hard. They are discrete installs though, so feel free to install 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 side by side.

.NET Framework can run side-by-side, that means any version can run in parallel without interrupting or overrdding files from the other versions.

.NET Framework can run side-by-side and each version number upgrade contain supports for previous version. For example, .NET Framework 2.0 support 1.0 and 1.1 etc. Starting from .NET Framework 3.0, Microsoft distributes all older .NET Framework with 3.0 installer, so basically you have all version installed. If you just using normal .NET applications, for now, .NET 2.0 SP1 is enough, unless you're running .NET applications that explicitly targets .NET 3.0 or .NET 3.5 environments...

yeap, can be installed side by side, and manageable from your IIS.
backward compatible.. i doubt so.. application developed in 1.0 once associated with 2.0 or higher in IIS, it may not work. you will have to tweak here and there such as web.config, some syntaxes etc. microsux..
