It has been more than a year now and so far things are looking good for PS3 compare last year, how long do you people think would the PS3 be around actively? PS1 has lasted around 6 years while PS2 is currently on its 8th year and looking quite well with some games still being release like Persona 4 and such. Sony has said that they planned to have PS3 to be around for 10 years.

In my opinion I think PS3 would actually last 10 years where PS4 would be out by then. First of all PS3 has the graphics which would not look poor even for many years to come. Look at Nintendo Wii, graphics isn't great but it's still fun to play and in fact currently the most console sold around the globe. PS3 has not even reached to its full potential yet. Another thing would be the Blu-ray disc which has won the format war thus not just able to store much higher data but also is now the standard media for high definition movies and such. Of course not forgetting its upgradeable HDD, operating system and so on.

I think it would last another 8 years as so far PS3 has just getting started to kick ass while MGS4 was released not long ago, it won't be that long we see HOME and Final Fantasy as well many other games and stuffs coming next year. Sales are also pretty good so far for this year. I'm sorry if this has been posted.

there are plans for a crysis port, not sure how far along in development it is yet. But yeah the developer did say that they can mimic DX10 effects on the PS3.

The only thing or things limiting its potential is the paltry 512MB of unshared RAM and the Nvidia GPU which is weaker than Xbox 360's GPU. No flame wars are intended.

The next console will arrived between 2010-2011 so PS3 will be 5 years lifespan. They did said it will last 10 years but this is not true when M$ is going to pull out their next-gen console in 2-3 years time.

MGS4 is the only MGS game in recent history that hasn't been pirated

I've read somewhere that the PS3 is only using about 30% of its power currently . Look at the graphics of some of the games that are out for it / coming out for it (FF13 , MGS , Uncharted , etc) . Ms's Xbox 360 doesn't even come close to them .

I don't buy into the "OMG JAPANESE RPG COMPANIES ABANDONING SONY" crap . You've got to remember that the Xbox360 had a one year headstart compared to PS3 . Obviously it would have more quality games due to this fact alone.

Actually.. two exclusive Xbox 360 games are porting over to PS3 - Eternal Sonata and BioShock...

M$ have learned enough from their shortcut. I don't think they will repeat the same mistakes again through their future next-gen. What makes you so sure they will repeat the same mistakes are beyond me. We will know in future, keep it that way.

Sony will beat them but it is going to take time. The main factor is the price and also the games, and the games are determined by the cost factor for the developers. If the games are being released on cross-platform, many people will stick with Xbox360 because it is modded and each disc cost around RM10. There are no pirated disc for PS3 so for budget-wise, if you wanted to win, you will need to win with the masses. Many people owned a Xbox360, try to asked them how many of them are buying the original games

If you think FF13 can make M$ cry, then you will need to re-think again. FF13 alone is not enough to bring sales to PS3. GTA IV is not a system seller like previous PS2. Maybe you can say it is not exclusive anymore and also because of the DLC that M$ have spent 50 millions on Rockstar. A console sales are determined by the price itself, how many exclusive games you have on the list and not to forget the price tag on the games. Also don't forget Star Ocean 4 are exclusive for M$ while the other 2 are timed-exclusive.

SquareEnix is a Sony strong supporter through last 2 gens, same as Rockstar. This time, they choose to go cross-platform. This is because the development for Xbox360 are less than PS3. This is why it is going to take Sony more time to get passed Xbox360, maybe in another 3 years time.

Firstly , the PS3 sales are catching up to Xbox360 sales .
Secondly , this may be my opinion but honestly it would actually surprise me if within a year more exclusive high profile title are announced for xbox360.
The simple reason is who in the right mind would want to release a game on a console where piracy is rampant when you could opt for the no piracy route by going with the ps3? The way i see it in the future the only exclusive titles that will come for the xbox360 are the ones that they develop themselves or pay moneybags for.

Not everyone who buys PS3 are just to play games. Some majority choose it because of the Blu-Ray play capability. PS3 is the cheapest BD player around. Xbox360 on the other hand are purely for gaming only.

It boils down to the development cost. You lose more money through the development FIRST rather than losing to the piracy LATER.

Yes but if a developer releases a game for the xbox360 , while it has a cheaper development cost compared to the ps3 , how would they be able to recoup their losses if a portion of their users pirate their copies. But then again we don't know the exact figure of a ps3 game development cost .

We will learned about it soon. SE are now half-hearted due to their recent financial breakdown. They can do anything out of our expectation. It could go either way, that would be better assumption for everyone.

How the game developers on the PC platform keep on releasing their games when their games get pirated one month, 2 weeks, 1 week or even 3 days before the street release date. If you can answer this, then you should have the answer for your question there.

We don't need to know how much it cost for them, we only know it cost more than Xbox360. Many games developers have voiced their concern regarding the development cost for PS3 ever since that console rolled out.

I think Square Enix should release Final Fantasy XIII as soon as possible where they should know better now about PS3's potential on software sales. I think it would be a worldwide release as well.

let me try answer that - coz nowadays ppl wans to go online play multiplayer or dowload the latest patch (which i bliff developers purposely produced a half-boiled program so that it'll need patches) and to do so, ppl need original PC game.

If you ask me... by far, XBox 360 have more problems in hardware than PS3. I own an Xbox 360 and most of my friend does. Now, I am the last of them that got put off by M$ because of its hardware problems, not to mention download content problems which, if your unit got hit by 3ROD, and M$ exchange with you with another unit of XBox 360, whatever download content you downloaded can only be used online and not offline (so for those who want to peer-by-peer, sorry... your new add on maps won't work... not to mention whatever add-ons too).

One by one my friends were seriously put off by this. And they got rid of their units as soon as they can. I am the last of them that currently right now, want to sell off my unit because it's not 3ROD... but 1ROD (System Error E 74).

I am not saying Xbox 360 is bad. Yes, they have some good games there and they are a year head start with some exclusive. But then, after playing Metal Gear Solid 4... everything change.

I doubt Gears of War 2 can look as good as MGS4 nor when it comes to intense action gameplay like in MGS4 motorcycle shoot 'em up scene (its one of the best I have ever encounter and so does everyone mention).

The thing is... both consoles XBox 360 and PS3 has their own merits and negatives. It's just what puts me off is the Xbox 360 hardware problem that when it happen, how many times are you going to send your unit to fix? Is this a considerable investment? Furthermore, the money spent on Xbox LIVE for subscription compare to PS3... when your unit is under repairs, how long does it take to really fix it while your subscription is just wasted in weeks?

I believe SE will be able to catch up... and this year, it's a start. Time will tell what will happen next... and at the end of the day, on each of their own is what games that both consoles has to offer will tell us how long PS3 will last.

its really depend on you guys how long the system would last...anyway a life span for each generation of consoles system is 5 years more or less..after the 5 years expired a new generation of console will hands on and the old one will still be support for 3-5 years to come depend on the sales of the games and also depending to developer wheather they can make profit or not on that platform...
about piracy stuff yes xbox360 is now being plague with piracy but still live is the only thing that seperate piracy and original..with all those hacker and moders out there i dont think ps3 will be uncrackable,i have seen their developement and im afraid one day sony ps3 will kneel down to piracy,but until that happen enjoy it while its last..
like me im a pc gamers and most of my pc gaming is original,so i bought a 360 console just for having some fun n chill so decided to use the mod one..
since my brother already own a ps3 which is in my reach anytime for me to enjoy it(lol)..but mostly the blu ray is the advantage for ps3..

I got a gut feeling PS3 will be the 1st PS gen to have a 2.0 on it.

Looking at how the technology change so fast now... ard near the 4th year, we will see PS3 Slim and PS3 2.0 with ugraded features..

As PS3 is also marketed as a media device, it will have dual HDMI connectors and a proper Audio DTS, THX, DOLBY Surround output.

Thats what i think, to see in the near future.

you sound like you support piracy and that's the number 1 reason why M$ & Sony never launched their consoles here officially while our neighbour Singapore got both consoles launched there ages ago. Nobody said gaming is cheap. even in countries like US, gamers there are already complaining about the price of games. If you can't afford to pay for original games, then you don't deserve to play them. If M$ ever release another console, you can be sure they will be going the Blu-Ray route because believe it or not, this media is actually pirate proof. When that happens can you say many people are going to buy M$ new console when there are no more pirate games for them to buy? If Hideo Kojima knew everyone will pirate his game, do you think he want to waste his time to make an awesome game like MGS4? HELL NO!!!!!!!! that's why I support original games so guys like Hideo Kojima will continue to make more incredible games like MGS4.

I think sony will last about 5-8 years to come,cause IMHO, PS3 is the only game console that offers DVD and Blu ray movie player, Media center(movie, pictures, songs and even web browsing) and also offers Ps3 owner to play games that are more creative and versatile such as Africa, Little big planet, and etc.

I've owned PS,PS2,PSP,Pc gaming rig and now a PS3, and i also played Xbox 360 at my cousin's house for few months and so far what i can see PC games and Xbox 360 have so many similar titles that made me think 360 is not worth to buy, thats why i stick to PS3.

Also based on my experience, M$ did repeat thier mistakes since the first Xbox by securing game titles that caters mostly american gamers with games categorized in Sports, Online War game, and yeah, war game....im not saying there are no games in other category, but most of Xbox title lacks the creative gameplay, just point and shoot, or based on existing sports game.

unlike most of the previous PS titles, the games are more creative and sometimes the stories could rival a movie, (eg:MGS4, Resident evil, FF13) these games allows gamers to utilize thier knowledges to solve puzzles and gamers can even feel satisfied without killing enemies like MGS4 which mainly focuses on sneaking skills and swift movements.

Anyway, back to topic i really think PS3 can last 5-8 years because of the variety of functions,versatile and creative games coming in the future.

I think you are generalizing the 360 game genre too much although it is largely true that they do cater to the American crowd.

But Resident Evil is multi-platform so it is not exactly just the PS3 having it. Sneaking around? The 360 have Splinter Cell, its no MGS4 but some prefers it, I know I do. The only massive hole in the 360 is a Japanese RPG and I am not a fan of it.

The 360 may not have a Little Big Planet but they do have some creative games, Viva Pinata strikes my mind.

So by all means, the game genre for both consoles is not the deciding factor.

And the 360 offers all the media centre functions as well, just not Bluray playback.

Soooo, I think both consoles will last a long time. Whatever you have or plan to get, you can be sure that there are games on it, so just buy it, play it and be happy with it.

maybe you're right, i guess game genre doesn't cut it, but i do think game titles play a major factor upon deciding which consoles to buy..
for example: eventhough splinter cell maybe catogorize as same as MGS4 stealth gameplay, MGS4 proved to be more enjoyable due to its graphics,lively characters and the stories.

I mean Hideo kojima actually created Johnny (aka Akiba) since MGS, and every character in the game has its own history, regardless on how important they are... i think games like MGS4 are more deep, unlike splinter cell which mainly concerns on the main character...

sadly, i do prefer SONY and M$ to merge together and create one universal console, but then it would be impossible as both of these companies are proud with thier abilities.

But based on things are going right now, i do think PS3 will regain the market share near in the future(if global inflation still due) and overtake Xbox 360 in no time.

For those who still argues Xbox 360 have better graphics blablabla..try to remember that PC graphics are better than these consoles but then why people still seek gaming console? one of the reason would the games...

Anyway summary was, I think PS3 can last 5-8 years .... 7 to 8 may be an over enthusiastic prediction but it is possible as i don't see much advances in that time for gaming consoles.

PS3 or PS4 need to work on the game developer tools and make the programming for the games easier. This is the major weakness of the console.

just like how newer and faster processors keep coming out all the time, the PS3 will no doubt be replaced by a faster and better machine. I'm guessing within the next 5 to 6 years.

that's how they squeeze more money out of us gamers anyway.

i do think blu-ray tech will be pirated, but not this year or even 2009...

I think the PS3 will not last longer than 5 years. Not because it is not good, but technology move so fast that Sony will definitely need to provide a new console to keep up to date with competitors. Maybe something will come out that is better than BD. Maybe games will no longer be on DVDs. Maybe no need TV anymore (holographic projection - haha this is too much Star Trek).

Anyway, no longer than 5 years is my vote.
