Don't get pets for your 10 year old son without proper knowledge. Getting a sugar glider for your son requires research or else it's better not to buy at all...
orangecow

10years old son ar........

orangecow
haha... it all boils down to a damn GP now... rite funky?
Cimredopyh
I agree, for a 10 year old boy exotic pets like sugar gliders / bearded dragons are not suitable.
They require too much specialized care.

Stick to something simple.

However no matter what pet you end up buying for your son, please do keep in mind that as his parent it is your responsibility to ensure he is giving it proper care.

Its up to you to research and pass on the knowledge to him.
Its up to you to make sure that he follows that knowledge.
Its up to you to take it to the vet when it gets sick.

There are so many irresponsible parents out there who buy animals for their children then totally ignore the animals situation and dont bother to provide vet care.
They dont realize that they are teaching their children that the life of a pet has no value.

Buy, Die, Replace.

Teaching your child to treat his pet well is teaching him to respect life. What a wonderful thing that is for a parent to give a child.
I hope you and your son can have this wonderful bonding experience together smile.gif

Edit: GP's are wonderful pets, they are very social animals.

For 10 years old, get him a Tamagotchi la. Dont burden a child's growth with responsibility to care for others. You can get a pet for yourself and teach the 10 year old child to care for it. You do 90% of the work, he does it some times on like Sat night or Sun morning. He barely has enough knowledge of growing up, you want him to keep and grow a pocket pet. Not right.
-GILA-
I think 10 years old is too young to handle pet like sugar glider. And u say interactive pet right? What about dog? But u urself have to be responsible also.

For your info my sons are very responsible they have an iguana and a dog.

They feed them and shower them also. I do not do all the work. Being a parent we must teach them responsibilities and also they are living things. Before buying anything for them I always ask them can you handle it.

Trust me....they can... thumbup.gif My sons are 10 & 12 yrs old....

I'm a bit confused..

the TS is orangecow, but now everyones talking about Funky Milo's son..

err, do these two related to each other??

seem's like a hijacked thread.. haha!

TO ORANGECOW:

best pocket pet i must say a sugar glider..

if you find gliders as expensive, might as well get ants.. much much cheaper.. can also carry in pocket wat..

TO FUNKY MILO:

Like i said, if your son can handle it, then it'll be ok..
but really have to make sure he can..

1 more thing is about their care, is your son gonna clean the cage, feed them etc??

but if you believe your son is responsible, it's up to you to decide..

btw, if really ah your son that hardworking & responsible, he's something like me when i was a kid.. hehe blush.gif

TS has a 10 year old son, i disagree with you on suggie being a good choice for a boy that age.

Funky Milo also has a 10 and 12 year old son, he is sharing his experience.
Funky Milo, you are lucky indeed to have children that can handle it

However not every 10 year old is like yours, more importantly not every parent is like you.

A vast majority of parents buy pets for their children when they themselves know nothing about how to care for it.
Then they wash their hands of it and leave everything up to the kid.
When the pet gets sick they cant be bothered to bring it to the vet because its troublesome, and they give excuses like "oh it cant be saved anyway, no vet will treat it"
When the pet dies, just blame the child for not taking care of it properly. And buy another one.

If you yourself are not willing to care for an animal properly, don't expect your young children to do it.

I agree with you, this pets are bought by them. They save their school money even the food.

Nothing is free in this world... Yes bonai my son clean and do all the things for their pet. My husband and I always sit down and talk with them before buying it. And Yes they USE THEIR OWN MONEY TO BUY!!!! When they use their own money they will be responsible just like us... right!!!!

Both gender are equally great. No 2 gliders are alike in personality and character so you must be prepare to love what ever you get.

As a glider owner, I seriously do not recommend gliders for children.

A glider should never be left with children without supervision. Are you willing to supervise them at all time?

I hope you can consider other options for your son.

If you feel it cost too much, look for other type of pets or save up until you are ready for one.

We have heard the "student" excuse so many times and it is being used either for the non-affordability or for the selling reason...

Wanting to keep a pet is all about commitment and how well you want your pet to be.

We have so many students here keeping pets at their own expense, some not only one type of pet, but a few...

Browse around for what suits you most, question your own commitment, then only decide okay.

Don't rush into deciding, it is not a good thing.

if acoording to question of the thread... i think sugar glider make a great pocket pets.. as they are inteligent n bond to their owner...

but, for a kids at 10-12 years old.. i dun think glider is good for them.. like wat jinhoe said.. they might hurt ur children, or ur children might hurt them if any of them get stress...

so.. the better pet for a kids around tat ages... guinea pigs, hamster, rabbit is the best choice...

i did hav them when i was 10 years old.. n bear in mind.. better neuter them if u wan to get a pair... bcoz... when they breed... u willl pening kepala... non-stop breeding..

yaya.. forget.. if u children can handle, chicken and duck,goose will make a great pets too.. {"personal experience"}

My son just turned 9 years old 2 months ago. Initially he wanted a ferret, but I find ferret is too smelly. So I disagree to buy one for him. Then he wanted a parrot that can stand on his shoulder. So I bought him a tamed Cockatiel. I must say that a tame Cockatiel is quite easy to carry around, but it can't fit into the pocket, it could fit into a medium size box and easy to carry around to grandma or auntie's house.

Cockatiel is very fun to play with for a kid, if the kid has the patience can even teach the bird to whistle and sing.
