Dear forumers,

I have been using my speedlite for a few months now and have been enjoying the "enhancement" to my camera gear.

I've always liked the ETTL function.
However, I noticed two things.
It switches from ETTL to TTL frequently by itself and when I take a picture, it refuses to fire.

Is it a common thing or is it a flaw?

I guess the contact between the flash and the shoe isn't that good but I would like other views and input.

Thank you.

I think this either happens due to firmware/interfacing issues (just update your firmware) or when the connection between the hot shoe and the flash isn't secure or is dirty. Try cleaning the contacts and reseating the flash.

If all else fails, just send the thing in for warranty.

Thanks for your help!
Updated the firmware and will be testing it for a couple of days to check whether the problem persists.
It's working fine now =]

Mine has the same problem twice today. I believe it has got something to do with poor contacts like what the net is speaking of. My camera firmware is the latest.

Ziss is why Nikon has those funny hotshoe protectors. Shame on Canon for not including a 20 sen piece of prastic. Probably oxidization is causing the electrical contacts to lose conductivity and hold on the contact pins. Another theory of mine would be too much force that would deform the metal bracket that holds the flash, lowering the holding pressure on the flash's hotshoe, thus a more unreliable interfact as a result.

Anyways, contact cleaner and 5 minutes should fix it right up.

it's not... i encountered the problem before when i use new batteries...

I can assure you I was using a fresh batch of batteries.
I have update my firmware from 1.0.5 to 1.1.1 and it's fine, for now. =] (Camera firmware)
Will update!

P/S - I doubt the flash unit has a firmware, couldn't find a download for it.
