I believe you may opt for window xp when you purchase it instead of window vista

Since you mentioned that he just got the machine and is still under warranty,
try sending the machine back to HP and ask them to downgrade to windows xp.
Doing so might get you a refund after the deduction of installing xp.
Try asking the customer support.
If you still insists on doing it yourself, just make sure you have the right drivers and know what you are doing.

i don't think there is such thing as sending it back 2 downgrade & still get refund.....
i mean, wen u bought the rig, u already purchase the vista license.
i think if hp does such thing, it would b, u have 2 purchase another xp license & also pay for the installation service.

& a keep in mind....no offense in dis post

dual boot is not a very good solution if u ask me... dual boot may cause trouble but that doesnt happen everytime...
anyways TS, it will not void the warranty as long ur windows are original so whenever u have problem no matter hardware or software i think they will also accept. coz imo HP technician can handle both windows as they have XP pc before this... in fact they may prefer xp rather than vista...
anyways if there is software problem i think u could solve it urself.... so no worries and format it...

depends on the user. If they are lazy to change they can never leave the comfort of XP. For me, Vista >>> XP in term of easy of usage and performance.
And from what I seen, there will be problem when downgrading to XP. HP uses vista compatible hardware in their new laptops, and as my office uses HP by the bundle, I also encounter ppl wanting to revert to XP. But many drivers fail to install in as driver support was basically non existant. I have a user who cannot install his LAN and Audio when using XP (vista has many drivers for these by defaults) even after installing the High Speed bus driver.
And even in the official forum for HP, the technician admitted that many of the hardwares won't work at all in XP condition as they were not meant to be used for the OS in the first place. The new hardware are so tightly made to cater for Vista that even using an Intel graphic controller, I failed to install Ubuntu using Live CD as the default driver for ubuntu was not compatible anymore. I had to manually load another driver which renders the usage of the live CD useless as ur using the Live CD to make installing easier

You can downgrade it to Windows XP, as long as you have the Windows XP license. When you think you ready and wanted to use Windows Vista. Just upgrade it from Windows XP back to Windows Vista. But I recommend you not to use upgrade. Format and reinstall would be better.
