Buffalo Inc., based in Nagoya, Japan, is a leading global provider of award-winning networking, storage and multi-media solutions for the home and small business environments as well as for system builders and integrators. With three decades of networking and computer peripheral experience, Buffalo has proven its commitment to delivering innovative, best-of-breed solutions that have put the company at the forefront of infrastructure technology.

Buffalo routers became a hot selling product somewhere around last year when it is known to be using the Broadcom chipset which allows it to be flashed to a third party firmware such as DD-WRT and Tomato. It was the WHR-G54S model that became one of the most wanted router at that time because the price of it was as low as RM145 and best of all once flashed with a third party firmware, it performs like any other expensive router with rich features. The price then were raised by most shops because it was on demand and the stocks are very limited at the moment due to the supplier not having stocks to supply.

Below are the Buffalo routers currently confirmed to be compatible with third party firmwares and are available in Malaysia :

Buffalo WHR-G125 (Requires at least DD-WRT v24-build2007-0516, Tomato not supported)

The Buffalo WHR-G54S and WHR-HP-G54 are still based on the Broadcom5352 chipset which is the one used in Linksys WRT54GL so it is compatible with most third party firmwares. The Buffalo WHR-G125 on the other hand is based on the newer Broadcom5354 chipset which has a default clock speed of 240MHz, for DD-WRT you will have to flash it with DD-WRT v24-build2007-0516 as the older ones do not support this chipset while Tomato isn't supported at all.

Above is a screenshot of my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 flashed with the latest Tomato 1.17 firmware. After flashing to a third party firmware, it performs really well and the QoS works like a charm so the word lag has been erased from my dictionary. thumbup.gif

So users of any Buffalo routers, come on in and have our own discussion regarding our beloved "animal" that will be serving us ! Discussions can go from general discussion, third party firmwares on Buffalo, troubleshooting, market price, where to buy etc. biggrin.gif

Guide on flashing Buffalo Routers with third party firmware :

1. If you are planning to flash DD-WRT on your WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54, read this.

2. If you are planning to flash DD-WRT on your WHR-G125, read this.

3. If you are planning to flash Tomato on your WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54, read this.

Note that all the guides are guide on flashing with Windows and Windows XP to be exact. The flashing method when using Windows Vista might be slightly different so do search up in the Wiki for the guide.

I have WHR-G54S & WHR-HP-G54 and both of them are flashed with DD-WRT v24 RC6.2 micro.
Both are working hard because of P2Ping tongue.gif

But the WHR-G54S always getting overheated when enable WiFi after flashing to DD-WRT. No problem when WiFi are turned off.
I've tried to reflash with the v23 SP2 via tftp, but the same problem still there.
From here, Im not sure if I did some mistake that I've overlooked while flashing or hardware defect. :S

Getting overheated ? Maybe your transmitting power is set too high ? Also because the router is small in size so it might get hot especially if the transmitting power of the antenna is increased.
kitsuna
The highest that I push on WHR-G54S is 60mW.
Then I tried as low as 10mW, still overheating. rclxub.gif

No problem when push up to 100mW with WHR-HP-G54 though.
Still cool as ever.
Even someone start "poking" on my WiFi network. laugh.gif

100mW after amp right ? I am using 7mW (before amp) and I have a stand fan directly blowing the router to help keep the temperature slightly lower. biggrin.gif
MX510
28mW also still overheat for Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 maybe will try using TomatoMan firmware
kitsuna
Nope, no amp.
Just push in the Advance wifi section.

Owh but 100mW is quite dangerous IMO. laugh.gif
kitsuna
Yup
Since the router only warm up to human body temperature (only guessing), I just let it stay at 100mW.

Lowyat Plaza is the only place where you can find many shops selling it. Places like Digital Mall in SS14 and those IT Centres like the one in Mid Valley will have only one or two shops selling and most of the time they will be out of stock since Buffalo routers are the ones people are hunting for at the moment.

No problem with WHR-HP-G54 here.
Only have problem with WHR-G54S that cannot run with wifi, will get overheating.

Sounds like some of us got bad batch for both models?

How high should I set the transmit power on my router?

Somewhere around 84 mW is considered to be the best setting for maximum power with minimum noise for most hardware. The Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 has a built-in amplifier. The amplifier is turned on by default; the radio power should not be set above 10 mW (on v23SP2), or 28mw on current firmwares (v24RCx). The forums have had discussions about what power level is safe, with little consensus. Use common sense and don't set the power higher than you really need to. If you're trying to get more range, consider using a different antenna and make sure you have a clear line of sight, two of the most critical factors in your router's range.

From a network security standpoint, the transmitter power level should be just enough to cover the intended area reliably. Optimal power settings can be determined by trial-and-error.

Well this actually depends on your usage. You can always play around with the settings until you are satisfied with it. For example, you don't always need to achieve an Excellent signal strength, somewhere Good to Very Good is sufficient enough as long as the connection doesn't drop.

I was told by a shop that the shop only will provide 1 year warranty, the remaining 2 years you will have to bring it back to the distributor/authorized service centre to RMA it.

Have been torrenting non-stop for two days already which is exactly the same as the age of my router. Working well and performance wise is great ! I am attaching a screenshot of the bandwidth graph meter from Tomato and the number of connections made by torrent.

Hmmm but I was told by the shops that the distributors also don't have stock so now it is quite difficult to get except for Lowyat Plaza but their price is a bit pricey.

If you plan for home usage only, the WHR-G54S is good enough. The WHR-HP-G54 has the amplifier to boost the transmit power which I think isn't really needed if used at home only. Both are using the same chipset so there isn't much difference between this two.
tictac
I also recomend WHR-G54S . RM130 only what smile.gif

Then dont forget to use this command tau to boost WHR-G54S performance. Can tapau my linksys kaw2 nya... hehe flex.gif

CODE
nvram set boardflags=0x2758

isn't this the so called command to "enable" built-in booster that "supposedly" built into WHR-HP-G54 board that "accidentally" were switched into WHR-G54S.

anyway, no one can confirm the rumors..

I have scouted around LYN for a wifi router and it seems that WHR-G54S model is hard to find. Every where is selling the WHR-HP-G54@RM190.
