I have a very old Canon Canolite D Flash from over 40+ years ago which still works and would like to see if there's anyone who has these optical flash triggers.

Would like to see if it would work with this flash so that I can start xperimenting strobist style.

Thanks.

That's OFT sensor... not OFT. Basically you use another flash as the trigger.

Ok. OK.. wrong naming.

but I still would like to know if anyone has it and can pinjam to test.

I just found out that my dad's old suntax 28afi still works and thus, I now have 3 flashes, but 2 of which can't really be used.

i have 1, but nothing special. Just fit it under the flash hotshoe socket, put in batteries and turn the flash on. Point it where ever you want and basically just trigger it with another camera's flash. Doesnt always work especially if the trigger flash does not fire powerfully enough or the sensor cover is not properlly exposed to the light. Will also fire when other camera flashes fire, such as other people's one which just means you have to wait for it to recycle before it can fire again.

Studio setting is ok to use it but not for event photography where there are other people taking pictures with flash. best mounted on a cheap mini tripods you get when you buy digicams that the shop gives your for free. If you are a nikon shooter just forget about it and invest in their sb800/sb600 flashes with the ittl system. otherwise look for a radio type trigger which will not trigger the flash due to other people's camera going off.

Hope this helps

edit: I just googled the picture of the canon flash that you mentioned. man thats a really old model. Do check that it is using the regular hotshoe type.

Thanks for the info man. Where are you? KL? Coming out for TT session or outing anytime? I want to pinjam and try lah.

yeah. the hotshoe should fit, it's the ISO standard one and it even fires when mounted on 400D. The other one I have - suntax 28afi is for an old minolta and it uses a diiferent hotshoe which I need to find the adapter for.

Radio units are expensive like the PW. I have seen some of those US ppl using some USD20 bucks radio trigger they got from ebay. Works, but also, again, sometimes a bit wonky.

I used to hate my old cam's direct flash so I got this optical flash thinger.

I used a small piece of mirror and pasted it at an angle on the camera's flash so the light will bounce to my left hand which is holding the OFT.

It works really well in "side flashing" the subject. The ugly glare from direct frontal flash is eliminated 100%, especially in indoor night shots.

Optical slave triggers are primitive in nature and just short the middle and side clamp. Yes, they will work fine, though you better be sure that your flash power can be controlled or else you'll be firing at full power all the time and compensating by stopping down.

Also, make sure your pop-up flash can support manual power, or else the optical slave trigger will be triggered by the camera's pre-flash, and the actual flashing will happen BEFORE the exposure!
