Lorenzo denies Toseland for debut pole!Jorge Lorenzo and James Toseland made an explosive start to their MotoGP careers by qualifying first and second for the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix, as Yamaha and Michelin swept the front row ahead of Sunday's inaugural night race.
And it was satellite Tech 3 rider Toseland who led most of the floodlit session, the reigning double World Superbike champion fitting an early qualifying tyre after one-third of the hour - a smart move given the ever sinking track temperatures.

Overall, a very very strong performance from Yamaha this time out. Even the rookies are on a rampage. 3 rookies in top 7 (lorenzo, dovisiozo, toseland)
Not much straight line speed difference. But lorenzo who was in a comfortable 2nd, just couldn't hang with Casey. Stoner was crunching out consistent fastest laps for like 10 laps in the race towards the end. Amazing stuff

Rossi with his new Yamaha + Bridgestone tyres looks menacing.
Both him and Stoner was on medium slick front and rear.

Congrats Jorge Lorenzo for his successful debut

Unfortunately for Stoner, Ducati's front end grip problems plagued him during the race. And a great comeback nonetheless. Would have taken ninth place if not for running wide while battling Nakano and Hopkins.
And Pedrosa was absolutely untouchable today. Runaway victory. Hopefully it's going to be a good season for Repsol Honda. Hayden did well as well. 4th place. And not forgetting saving a fall with his elbows mid corner. Miracle.

Facts, stats and trends from 22 years in Mugello- The first premier class race at the now world-famous track was won by MotoGP Legend Barry Sheene, riding a Suzuki. He triumphed by a margin of just 0.1s from Phil Read in one of the closest finishes of all time, in a marathon race lasting over 62 minutes.
- Since that first event Suzuki have won just once more at Mugello, with Kevin Schwantz in 1992. John Hopkins´ fifth place last year is the best result for Suzuki with their four-stroke MotoGP machine.
- Yamaha have had six premier class victories at Mugello; in 1978 with Kenny Roberts, in 1991 with Wayne Rainey and for the last four years with Valentino Rossi.
- Honda have been the most successful manufacturer in the premier class at Mugello, with a total of fourteen victories.
- Ducati have had a rider on the podium at Mugello for the last three years – but are still looking for their first victory at their home race. Ducati riders have started from pole for the last two years – Sete Gibernau in 2006 and Casey Stoner last year.
- Mugello is one of just five circuits on this year´s calendar where Bridgestone have not had a MotoGP win. The others are Estoril, Assen, Sachsenring and Indianapolis, the latter being used for the first time this year.
- Mugello is Kawasaki´s least successful MotoGP circuit, with a best result of 10th in 2005 with Shinya Nakano onboard.
- Mick Doohan took six successive premier class victories at Mugello – a feat matched by Valentino Rossi last year.
- Valentino Rossi is the most successful rider across all the classes at Mugello with a total of eight victories; one each in 125cc and 250cc classes to add to his six MotoGP wins.
- Loris Capirossi was the first Italian rider to take a premier class victory at Mugello when he won the 500cc race in 2000, after a race long battle with his countrymen Biaggi and Rossi. Both of his rivals fell in the closing stages.
- The highest recorded maximum speed at Mugello is 343 kph (213.1 mph) set by Alex Barros on his factory Honda during the race in 2004.
- Italian riders have been very successful in the lower cylinder classes at Mugello, having had ten wins in the 250cc class and eleven in the 125cc class.
- The 125cc races have proved to be very close at Mugello in recent years; last year was the closest ever top four finish in the 125cc class and in 2006 Mattia Pasini won by the smallest measurable margin of one thousandth of a second.
Go Vale!!
