Upscaling is there for a reason. The PS3 is somewhat marketed as a home entertainment center and as such, DVD playback is expected of it. All this conjecture about ruining your lens is just a whole lotta FUD if you ask me.

How does using a DVD-RW differ from JSparrow discs (in terms of so-called 'lens wear')? If anything, JSparrow discs would seem to me to be better quality (industrial pressed) compared to home burning.
Which again, leads me back to my humble opinion that complaints of burnt out lenses caused by JSparrow discs are completely unfounded.

not really...if u compare an original disc for example (PS1 games or Ps2 games) and a JSparrow version...wat actually happen is it is straining the lens more when the console is reading JSparrow disc (hence its noisier) as the disc is thinner...(much thinner compared to an original game disc)...

actually for uncle ho disc, those DVD+/-R version is better than the industry pressed discs. Because want to save cost and rush for stock completion, they tend to hurried the process of producing the disc, hence lower the quality of the disc. But if using burnt disc, at least the disc's quality has been maintained and won't damage the lens

i used both ahem and original
now still no problem
i think its doesnt matter ahem or original or even bluray disc
as long its not all scratched up.. and very bad condition
any disc also can spoilt the lens
