I'd take the Powershot A570IS. Affordable and performs well with low light conditions. ISO800 still fine. IS function is very useful and practical. Uses AA batteries.
The only downside is the a lil big than most slim cameras now and the flash cycle is a little slow IMO.
First time when I buy a P&S is the capability when taking low light, which means the ISO. Although some camera offer high ISO, it doesn't mean a good thing. Some camera offer high ISO but doesn't handle high ISO well. The photos taken from some of those cameras which offer high ISO is horrible. But not in the case of the A570IS. It offers up to 1600, and I think it's still usable up to a point.
Next time that I'd look for is whether it has an optical viewfinder. Having one assists me in taking a shot more stable cause I can use the camera against my face. Although a lot of cameras have IS now, but even if you're hand is not steady enough, it wont help.
Batteries comes in next. AA batteries are readily available and also rechargeable AA doesn't cost as much as proprietary batteries.
Next comes IS and finally LCD Screen.
Zoom doesn't matter much to me cause most cameras offer at least 3X optical zoom nowadays which is sufficient for a casual P&S.
