it actually depends.
b/w shots are usually used to bring out details if i'm not mistaken.
like facial details.
or high contrast pics.

IMO..its a lil bit misconception. ppl said :
Firstly you have to think in B&W before shooting in B&W . b&W / single toned pictarz is about emotion. so its mixed and play with composition and other element to make it 'alive'. and i love this phrase:
"If you're photographing in color you show the color of their clothes -
if you use black and white, you will show the color of their soul."
i'm noob. so togather-gather we learn

I usually shot in color then look at the pictures afterwards to suit what I'm trying to convey. If shoot in color can be converted into bw but shoot in bw how does to convert into colors?
Iqbal, do you use any image editors for your bw shots? Mine I used virtualphotographer

somehow, for certain subject which is kind of "old", I will prefer it to be captured in black and white... so that it will looks more "classical"...
so as the earlier post by timothyy, I strongly agreed that it should depends on the mood lo...

For those scenes that produces the "old" kind of feeling, i'd make the pic duotone, abit of sephia kind of tone.

i have been taking photos using colour as my medium for the past 6 years.
didn't touch black and white for 6 years.
last month, a curator told me to come out with a maximum of 5 pieces of black and white photographs for an exhibition. and he said no inkjet. only silver prints. i was like OMFG!!!
i think it is hard for me to take black and white anymore. sigh!
